  • Down time?

Was there some kind of technical error today what with the forums being down for several hours?

Doug-O, if you ever have a bandwidth problem, I am willing to pay $2.50 a month for the excellent service this site offers. I am sure some of the others would be just as willing.

    Am I right?

With just twenty people, that would be $50!

When you think of the resources this site has, it is worth more than a miniscule $2.50 a month. That would be a deal.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

There was a problem with the forums earlier today related to the database. Aisling sent me mail about it, which was good because I might not have noticed until tonight. I apologize for the downtime and please feel free to send me mail anytime there is a problem with the site.

I appreciate your offer of a donation. I've actually got it covered right now, so that shouldn't be necessary. If the costs of the site were to increase significantly for some reason, then I would consider asking for donations.

I have the site running on a leased server that I use for miscellaneous services (e.g., mail server, ftp, games, side projects, etc). I hosted a 16 player BF1942 server on the machine for awhile. Maybe when Half-Life 2 finally ships I'll think about hosting games again. I will make sure whatever I run doesn't negatively impact this site.

Included in the lease is 500GB (gigabytes) of bandwidth per month so there is little risk of running out. That's easily two orders of magnitude more bandwidth than this site requires. Hosting multiplayer games 7X24 is what really eats up the bandwidth.

    Later,

Thanks for the info. The error message I got claimed that you were sent an email so I didn't send another. Now I know better.

      Thanks for the site!

That's actually a good point. I didn't receive the email that vBulletin said it sent. I have received other email alerts from the board, so I'm not sure why it didn't work this time.
