  • Mark Zicree's Space Command pilot on YouTube

The first 58 mins of the Space Command pilot is now on YouTube to view for free. Not seen this myself yet, so no idea on quality of the product. But quite a lot of SF alumni including some B5 actors. I believe it's still a work in progress.

Captain John Sheridan: I really *hate* it when you do that.

It's FAR worse than I ever expected. Feel kinda sorry for Mira Furlan and Robert Picardo as they're capable actors, but even they can't polish bad writing, bad editing, bad pacing and bad sets.

Oh sooo sorry I missed this for so long, but I am so sad to hear Ubik's review. Of course it is Ubik But in all seriousness I tried to follow this project for sooooo long, but it just took tooo long. I feel terrible for Mira because it appears this just turned out to be another Lantern City. DAMN! But I will still watch it when I have time, you know just to verify Ubik's assessment. LOL

Zicree has enthusiasm in spades, I just wish he had the talent to match it. I was speaking to a friend who was a big Sliders fan, and he related to me how Zicree had managed to ruin that show with his short tenure. On paper, I like the idea of Space Command, but I've seen fan film on smaller budget achieve way more. It's pretty awful.

Okay since I had the time I sat down and watched it. I don't know. I agree it isn't great, but I have seen worse and there were parts I really enjoyed. I think it might be a bit misguided, but there were certain aspects that had a lot of potential. I definitely see that Zicree could be the problem. The shame of it is that I hope it doesn't cloud people's assessment of the cast. I think they did a pretty good job with what they were working with, though the introductory speech on Paladin might have been one of the most difficult things I've ever had to sit through. I was actually pleasantly surprised by that actor until that moment, not that I feel it had much to do with him unless Zicree told him to improvise that speech.

Other than the overall misguided feel of the project my main effects issue would be Doug Jones' headgear. That is definitely something someone should have spotted and vetoed the hell out of. LOL I don't want to pick on the effects because I appreciate the no-budget effort put forward, but that headgear seemed unnecessary and was a terrible distraction. [ONE EFFECTS COMPLAINT: That car ride was BAD!]

I mean there is a lot to pick apart here, but I thought Furlan and Picardo were particularly good. I actually see some potential with Mumy's character, but wow did I cringe when the son opened his mouth. Boxleitner wasn't in it enough to even really comment on what he did.

I honestly don't care if the FX are awful, that doesn't matter to me, but for the pacing and plotting to be this bad? Nah, I'm out.

A a budget production is fine by me, but it has to have good characters and story. But this episode just kinda zips aimlessly all over the place with no real connective tissue. It just jumps from one half formed plot point to another. Dialogue is also pretty bad. And yes, the car scene should have been left on the cutting room floor. Work with what you have! You can shoot an awesome episode on one set, I mean 'Intersections in real time" anyone. I mean B5 has numerous shortcomings, from hammy overacting to very cheap looking sets, but I can look beyond that, because it has a great story to tell and excellent characters that I can care about.

I also disliked how Zicree just chucks in well know yet affordable SF actors as a marketing gimmick, then give them no real meat to their roles (probably because he can't pay them).

Nah, I mean for a second cut, it's pretty terrible and even the audio mix was totally off. That amateur shit right there, I could get a better audio mix in my home studio. If I'd backed this to any extent, I'd kinda regret it deeply right now.

Those two are gonna get covered in bugs! Worst scene is probably the 'funny' pre-ship launch speech from Captain Slick Hair. Cringe, cringe, cringe, cringe... awful writing. Even the cast look embarrassed to be in the scene.

Maybe it will acquire some kind of cult status like The Room, for being so bad it's good? I dunno....

So Zicree posted episode one again as a tribute to Mira. I have to say that it seemed better this second, or third time, around. Unfortunately he left the pre-launch speech in, but some of the cringey effects seemed a bit improved, and some of the effects looked down right good. Honestly outside the pre-launch Speech my only issues really came down to the whole disappointed dad stuff when "Captain Slick Hair" goes home; all the scenes with Mumy when the son is involved; and I'm still not a fan of the Doug Jones headpiece, but it seemed less noticeable because I felt more wrapped up in the story. It is still amateurish in parts, but I actually want to know where some of this is going with these characters. Dare I say it, I didn't hate this. Of course it may just be sentimentality for Mira, but her's were not the only scenes I liked. BUT Zicree really needs to hire a better writer and director before completing the next episode.

This is worth a read. I still think the project is re-heated garbage, despite some great actors being attached.

I hate when I make mistakes and I think I've made a big one in putting you all onto the Space Command project. Although it appears to be a going

So the first chapter of Space Command is coming out on Blu-Ray and Your Fearless leader placed an order. Say what you will I do love people in the cast and this just seemed like a collectible I wanted. ..... Everyone is good with me claiming the "Your Fearless Leader" title right?!
