  • Sense8 canceled at Netflix

    Damn

    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/liv...etflix-1009404

“After 23 episodes, 16 cities and 13 countries, the story of the Sense8 cluster is coming to an end," said Cindy Holland, VP of Netflix original content.

"It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable," she continued. "Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world. We thank Lana, Lilly, Joe and Grant for their vision, and the entire cast and crew for their craftsmanship and commitment,” said Cindy Holland, VP Netflix original content."

Not even a month after its release. And the documentary isn't even out yet (and may never come out now). It's like they had already decided it before it came out, or like by the first 2 weeks or something. Weiiiiird.

edit No industry source so far has any scoop or anything about what happened.
edit I wonder if someone from the cast didn't renew and it fell apart (aside of the obvious expensive budget etc).

That's what I've been thinking. But I think it would take more than just one cast member to not re-up.

I'm just thinking it was weird how a whole 2 months after Deadline reported Netflix had renewed the contracts (or how the process is called) for some of the 8, producer Malerba said the same thing, that they are still working to get all 8. I wouldn't expect this to take so long, unless some people didn't really want to do it anymore (it is a tough shoot) compared to other opportunities that had opened for them.

            Here are the dates:

            http://deadline.com/2017/03/sense8-n...al-1201955448/ <- March 2
            http://newsflix.altervista.org/sense...o-della-serie/ <- May 8

Update: all sources in the OP finished their "developing" of their news story. None of them has any scoop, while at least one always had some for all previous cancellations; Marco Polo, Bloodline, The Get Down.. Very weird.

edit Also of those 8 that renewed, they were on hold until June per the Deadline article, right? So effectively today, June 1, all of them became unattached again, hence Netflix making the official announcement today I guess?

Man, what the fuck!?! This show was really just coming into its own with Season 2. I really enjoyed S2, it had great momentum. My best guess is that the high budget vs total views just didn't add up for Netflix.

Damn, hope there's some clarification on exact reasons for the cancellation from any of the parties involved soon. God damn it.

And I was so hoping that somehow, Netflix would help finance a new B5 venture. Really saddened by this. The show wasn't perfect, but it was unique and daring in what it did. It deserved to live on just for that.

Captain John Sheridan: I really *hate* it when you do that.

              Kosh: Good!

No telling. For instance, the pick-up date for B5 was in the middle of a month. I was shocked that they let the options lapse in the first place.

There's a petition calling for a renewal, and while i highly doubt it will end up doing anything significant (unfortunately) i'm impressed that it has gotten 60,000 supporters within 3 hours of the cancellation announcement.

                          Variety article: http://variety.com/2017/tv/opinion/c...us-1202450885/

A Troubling Trend in Cancellations: Are Inclusive Shows in Danger?

“Rosewood,” “The Get Down,” “Sense8,” “Pitch,” “East Los High,” “Sweet/Vicious,” “Underground,” “American Crime.”

These are all shows that were canceled recently. Notice a pattern?

They all had non-white and/or non-male leads or ensemble casts. Often the main creative voices behind the scenes were not necessarily what most showrunners are — white men.
The programs listed above were all very different from each other in tone and execution, but they were the kind of programs that, from an inclusion standpoint, Hollywood leaders have repeatedly said they want to make.

The industry did make those shows, and now they’re all gone.

The petition is closing in on 100k supporters. I wonder if that will garner at least some kind of attention from Netflix.
