the Pat Tallman incident
I am just starting the Vol 1 and I got to page 20 last night in JMS' introduction to the series. On page 20 he talks about what the studio and network did so that Andreas Katsulas would not become Galen. He also says, "They'd pulled this previously with Pat Tallman after the pilot ..."
I think this is the first time I've seen JMS talk about this in such words. Back in a post dated 8/22/1993 12:41:00 PM he just says "in deference to other opportunities which she felt were more promising, Pat Tallman passed on returning to the B5 project."
I remember being at a convention where Pat Tallman talked about this and her story was quite along the lines of WB messing around not unlike the situation JMS talks about with Andreas here.

I keep trying to get my priorities straightened out, but somehow work keeps coming back to the top. It's that whole paycheck thing. They just don't understand. There is, however, a long weekend. I remain hopeful!"That was the law, as set down by Valen. Three castes: worker, religious, warrior."

It's been so long since there were actually spoilers to discuss...I dunno, I'm fine with just continuing things here and adding a spoiler warning to the subject header. In fact, I'll do that now.

It'd also be nice if some details on the rest of the scripts of the planned 22 episode first season, could be given. e.g. the Dureena sword trilogy.
p.s. I'm glad that we got Peter Woodward as Galen. If Andreas had been Galen, every time I heard the voice, I'd be thinking G'Kar, and it would have thrown me out of the story. IMHO, Peter was perfect as Galen, plus then we got the natural fit of Edward Woodward as Alwyn. Can't get better than that.Mac Breck (KoshN)

Joe's commentary in the book helps illuminate a lot of the posts around season 4/5 renewal and the buildup to Crusade. It was interesting to read that Warners decided their sequel to Babylon 5 should have no connection to Babylon 5 because they didn't want viewers to feel like they had to watch the first show to watch the second show, but then they wanted to jump-start Crusade by having those characters appear in Babylon 5, which also explains Joe's comments back then about "A Call to Arms" being a Babylon 5 movie that wasn't a part of Crusade.
I thought an interesting character in the early treatment (besides Zathras and Marcus) was a Minbari named Varenni from the warrior caste that felt Earth got what they deserved with the Drakh plague; apparently that character's background depended on Babylon 5 too much as well. It's too bad TNT didn't just let Joe loose to do what he wanted with the show.
Am reading the original draft of "Racing the Night" right now, and it feels more quickly paced than the final episode; enjoying it so far. I hope "random TNT memo quote" right before the scripts is a continuing feature - loved this one: "The ship is an under used character. Gideon needs to 'drive' it more."Last edited by JoeD80; 09-04-2010, 01:04 AM.
