  • Any Comments on the "Other Voices" volumes?

I have the complete JMS scripts books, but wasn't planning to grab the "Other Voices" ones. Now that the timeline is out, and I have to grab that, I'm reconsidering buying "Other Voices". So, what do you all think of them?

Absolutely worth it. No question at all.

I liked them a lot. It was fun to hear different 'voices' other tham JMS talking about the show and the episodes.

ETA: Don't forget, the Other Voices books are only available till the end of this month.

Also, don't forget that while the premises for a lot of the first-season freelance scripts were assigned, Larry DiTillio was acting as script editor at the time and consequently knew an awful lot about what was going on with the series on a regular basis. Larry would be the first to say that many of his scripts filled in certain character and story gaps, which is why they complement JMS's scripts so well.

I agree. For all that B5 is known for the arc and all, I think that in large part it was the 'other voices' scripts that provided a lot of the texture of the B5 universe.

What I also liked is the inclusion of the original drafts -- not the one's that in the end got shot.

While previously with jms' scripts we had some scenes written differently, cut for time, the changes here are substantial. For example, in Peter David's "All the Honor Lies" it was originally written that Delenn uses her "gravitional ring" not seen since "The Gathering". There are quite a few such changes in all the scripts; some of them were really good ideas and it's a pity they're never to be seen.

I agree; most of the freelance S1 and S2 scripts had rewrites by JMS and/or Larry DiTillio, so it's a lot more interesting to compare the original scripts with what ultimately ended up on air.

                Thanks all!

I guess I really should get the whole B5 scripts/history collection; poor, poor, checkbook.

I can't find a thread about other voices volume 2, so I'll just post here. I'm a little late to the party, but I've gone through a little over half of the first season now with the scripts in hand and comparing versions after reading the intros by the authors. The Other Voices books are some of the most fun because there are incredible differences between the original writings and what was aired.

I really appreciate Ms. Drennan's commentary which had so much insight even though it was such a long time ago! Larry DiTillio really put his all into giving some great answers as well.

This is only my second time watching the episodes not written by JMS in the first season, which I've always skipped because I remembered not enjoying it so much the first time.

However, in subsequent watch-throughs I think I'll be watching everything. They really worked hard to keep the characters progressing even in the "non-arc" episodes and it shows once you've gone through the series enough. This is the show that keeps on giving.
