  • Anyone else order, but not open?

Hello fellow B5 FANatics. Yes, lurking for about oh, *FOREVER* and chose to come out of hiding.

    That all being said...

Is there anyone else here who ordered the scripts, (All of them. "Other Voices" included,) and has not removed the shipping plastic?

Indeed, I want to read them, but gosh... This is a COLLECTABLE!!!! For some reason, I can't justify breaking the plastic for my own delight.

Am I nuts, or are there others?

Well, you *should* open them all and check that they are in good order. Some people have received partially unreadable books , but I have found the script team (Jaclyn) is normally very helpful.

Jaclyn helped me out on a certain issue, (and yes she is held in the highest esteem) but really... As a collector, still in plastic... Would it matter if they were in good order? I mean, collectors like rare "oops'es."

I just want to know, value wise. I do want to read them. TERRIBLY WANT TO READ THEM. But will the value plummet?

With something like this, there's no real way of knowing how they'll retain value. I'm a collector but my collections are for my own enjoyment, not for investment purposes.

Me, I got two sets because I knew I'd wear out at least one.

That's absolutely what I'm afraid of. I will wear them out to the point that the backing will be made of duct tape. I'll read them as a book. I'll read them with the episodes. I'll read them with friends, with the episodes to point out this or that.

But then that collector part of me comes out, and I'm shooting myself that I didn't order double.

          GRRRR!!!!

These are the decisions that make a person mad!

Well, you're a far stronger person than I if you can keep them pristine. But then I horrify real collectors regularly when they realize that I don't make any attempt to keep my original script collection as untouched as possible. I read them, grab the occassional autograph on the title page and use them for reference regularly. Why spend the money and not get any enjoyment for yourself?

Oh, and welcome out of Lurkdom!

I was actually considering the same thing - to leave them in the plastic wrapping. But then, I ordered them to gain more information about the show background-wise (sometimes I think I enjoy watching/reading ╗Behind the scenes½ material more than the real show) so I tore the wrapping open. The consideration took about ... hmm, 5 seconds

I can understand what you are going at, but still: if I'd be a B5 fan who didn't have the chance to order the scripts now, I'd be thrilled to get the set on eBay or something one day, even if it is visibly used. It's the content, that matters (at least to me).

And about the "oop'sies": I had a problem with volume 12 where complete pages were missing. That I wouldn't consider an "oop'sie" but rather annoying so my advise would be to check your books as well.

I mean, if you're really careful, you could open them, read them and then re-seal them. Just ask around in a local bookstore if they know how to do that or who could help you with it.

It's too late now, but I bought an extra copy of issues I liked. My 1st copy of 14 is pretty rough already.

I purchased a few sets, and my intention is to open them all, make sure everything's what it's supposed to be, keep one set out for reading and such, and get the rest re-shrink-wrapped and stored someplace cool, dark, and dry.

Books are meant for reading, not sitting shrink-wrapped on a shelf in the hope of accumulating value.

Sorry, just the way I see it.

I heartily agree. As a book lover, I can't imagine leaving one unopened and unread simply to accumulate in value. If I want an investment, I'll buy a second copy.

Collectors live in a whole different universe than I do. If I can't make use of something, it doesn't get bought. I may keep things after use (I have almost 4,000 books in a back room), but I donÆt collect for the sake of having something or for an investment.

So yeah, you're nuts. But I mean that in a nice way.

I'm glad I read this as I hadn't heard about the production issues before. I still have most of my copies in plastic just because I haven't reached their part of the series in my current viewing. I'll check them all now to make sure I don't have a bad copy in their midst.
