  • Script Book #11 - SPOILERS

Just getting the thread ready since the book goes on sale tomorrow and the books just flew out the door from CP with the last volume. Expedited shipping on this one is tempting.

I'm pretty excited for this one; jms's brief comments about it really has me feeling pretty curious about what revelations it has in store for us.

Plus, getting to read the script for my all-time favourite episode (SiL) is gonna be a huge treat.

I got the SiL script a couple of years ago when JMS came to Toronto and he signed it for me. It was just pages stapled together so I'll be looking forward to seeing it all bound up nicely in a book.

No, darnit, I can't. Fortunately I'm a very quick reader but this is an extra long introduction, too. Hmmm...maybe I can call in late?

Got mine today, read all the intro stuff...and, for some reason, I was a little bummed. There's a lot of great info, but it really feels...rushed?

I'm used to JMS's style in these intros, and while the ENTIRE intro is huge, the intros to the individual stories are really boiled down to the barest factoids. It's almost like, after going through the emotional aspects of the Season 4 to Season 5 brouhaha, AND the Sleeping in Light intro, all the others were shorted just a bit.

I truly enjoyed the intros, and there are many points in the intros that remind me of the casual, almost "folksie" pace of the previous books...but for the first time, I felt like saying to JMS and the scripts folks, "Hey, don't rush. If it's gonna take a few extras weeks to give Joe time to write what he fully wants to, I can wait".

(of course, it's also possible that JMS has so many projects in the fire these days that we're lucky to get any time at all for the script books...so I'm not trying to be critical...just putting my two cents worth out there).

Now, on to the scripts themselves! Always enjoy reading JMS work "in its original", as it were.

I didn't get a feeling of it beeing rushed. Over the last couple of books there haven't been many on-set stories but I think that's because by this time JMS isn't getting to the set a whole lot. The stress and exhaustion he was going though back then is showing in these books even after all this time. The commentary for "The Very Long Night of Londo Mollari" is kind of short but I attributed that to the fact that JMS didn't seem completely satisfied with how effective the switches between real and surreal were (I thought it was great, personally). And after writing about the synchronicity with Richard Biggs, where can you go?

What struck me was the difference in 'feel' between the writing of the main introduction where the attempt was clearly to try and stay unemotional and the writing in the "Sleeping in Light" commentary which is so completely emotional.

And there's one paragraph that really caught my eye. It's in the commentary for "The Paragon of Animals" and might just be the germ of an idea for a story we'll see in the future. Hope so.

For some reason the word spoiler is in the title of this thread. Is that a warning to avoid spoilers?

I'm guessing she doesn't want to state what the story idea she sees actually seems to be, because people posting story ideas on the internet has raised problems before. "Passing through Gethsemane" almost didn't happen because someone posted an idea along its lines - indeed, it was originally going to be Season 2, but got delayed till 3 when they were finally able to get some sort of permission/waiver finalized and signed by the poster.

Not that JMS seems to visit this forum, but just in case he does, best to leave it clear of story ideas for his arrival.

That could be it. I got the impression that it was something clearly written.

                            Sorry.

Sorry, gang, I wasn't trying to be mysterious, really. I wrote it that way because there's the way I reacted to what JMS wrote when I first read it but what I was reacting to wasn't really what he wrote.

Sigh...that's not clear either. Okay, here's the part I meant:

                              Spoiler (highlight to read)
Y'know, the more I revisit the world of the Psi Corps, and explore what it would mean to discover beyond a shadow of doubt the existence of telepaths among us, the more I'm convinced that this is a story I really need to tell one of these days.

                              We'll see.

My first reaction: Oooh, goody, he's going to write about the Telepath War!

Second thoughts: Maybe not. This could be more about the discovery of verifiable telepaths. But that was explored somewhat in the Telepath Trilogy of books. But JMS didn't write those, even if he did provide the outlines.

There are all sorts of roads that JMS could go down exploring this theme and while Lyta and Bester could be in a bunch of them, they wouldn't have to be, either.

So...anybody else read their copy yet or are you waiting for the weekend.
