  • Hitchhiker's DVD (SPOILERS)

Got it the other night, and watched it right after getting home (I took a shower first, but that's all).

I loved the two homage bits I saw, the use of the original BBC series music, and the appearance by the original Marvin in the queue on Vogsphere.

Trillian was prettier than the original, and was a little more believable as an intelligent type. Not quite sure about the romance aspect with Arthur, though. It totally changes things as far as "So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish" and "Mostly Harmless" would be concerned.

Zaphod's second head was a little odd, popping up under the other one. And Humma Kavula cutting it out? What was that about?

The entire bit about the sequences with Humma Kavula and Vogsphere threw me for a bit of a loop.

Alan Rickman was OUTSTANDING as the voice of the new Marvin, although I am not quite certain about the new Marvin's appearance.

Other than that, it was enjoyable, but not quite what I expected. I hope to see the sequels soon, though! Long live the late Douglas Adams!

I also noticed on IMDB that Stephen Fry, the narrator and voice of the Guide was also the narrator from the Harry Potter movies. Neat bit of trivia for all.

I just got the DVD . . . . I read half the book before seeing the movie in the theaters . . . I love the book, and this was a good laugh too . . .bit of odds and ends, but I figure "it could be worse"

I talked to the owner of my local video store, as this was the first version of Hitchhiker shes ever seen / heard - and she loved it...

Personally I felt like I'm guessing everyone who knows the story well feels - nice to see it on the big screen, but Definitely not what I expected....

Having said that - hearing the original theme was cool, as was spotting the original Marvin - it's a real shame that the full conversation Arthur and Ford have with the guard on the Vogon ship ("resistance is USELESSSSSSS!!!") never made it in there though - that was my personal favorite....

gotta say though - the magrathean factory floor scene was cool - musta been awesome on the big screen...

If you want the full version the BBc complete series do an audio book of Douglas Adams reading the fulltext. I bought it in england a while back (didn't know it existed and was buying some pratchett audiobooks). I'm saving until after my exam on 10/10/05 - I did listen to a wee bit though and it's good.

"There are no good wars. War is always the worst possible way to resolve differences. It degenerates and corrupts both sides to ever more sordid levels of existence, in their need to gain an advantage over the enemy. Those actively involved in combat are almost always damaged goods for the rest of their lives. If their bodies don't bear scars, their minds do, ofttimes both. Many have said it before, but it can't be said to enough, war is hell. "

              hehe!

tks for that - I still have a couple of different versions of the story apart from the books though - back in Wales at my parents house my vinyl copy of the TV show is still gathering dust (I hope!), and I have the version you talk about on tape here somewhere - had a soft spot for that story for a loooong time!

whatever your opinion on the movie was . . . you still have to take in the fact that the Screenplay was written by Douglas Adams himself. I know he had a heart attack at the time he was working on it, so I dont know how far he got, but the screenplay is credited to him.

Just picked up a copy of an SFX magazine special, listing the top 50 favorite british sci fi shows - one article was a comparison between all the different versions of hitchhiker (radio, book, TV and movie), showing where everything was the same and where it differed - makes one thing very clear though, that being Douglas Adams love for tweaking his story....

its true! but with a story like that, it's always fun to tweak it.

I don't know which he had more fun with. Tweaking the story, or tweaking us!

Either way, I love Adams work, and he will be missed.

I think Adams had a blast with deadlines, and the whooshing sound they made as they passed
