  • Japanese Horror Movies.......

    Hey Folks....

Well got home from work finally and quickly buried myself in the DVD sections of all the local stores to see whats out now......

had to tear myself away from the B5 boxed sets (hmv has them all) - theres a mortgage payment due sadly! - but came across a nice little boxed set of all the "ringu" movies on which the 2 "ring" movies are based...

not too bad for curiositys' sake i must say - i'd recommend them if you havent already seen them......

now must dash - just got my copy of "hitch hikers guide..." so I'm going to spend the day wandering around in my bathrobe carying a towel.....

    ttfn.....

I cant understand why they dont just release the Japanese horror films in the theaters like they do with the action films. ok, so the action films usually are Chineese but still . . . I Find the Japanese version of the film just as effective if not better than the Americanized version.

I gnerally find (in Ireland anyway) that the foreign films tend to get releases in the Arthouse cinemas. Since we only have one proper one in Dublin (the IFC) it's possible to see these movies on a (medium) screen.

I'm a purist anyway, I paid an excessive amount of money for Akira in japanese on Video tape.

It degenerates and corrupts both sides to ever more sordid levels of existence, in their need to gain an advantage over the enemy. Those actively involved in combat are almost always damaged goods for the rest of their lives. If their bodies don't bear scars, their minds do, ofttimes both. Many have said it before, but it can't be said to enough, war is hell. "

well . . . and I buy Japanese anime anymore on DVD for the option of english or Japanese language. I was talking about the theaters strictly. Action films that are asian dont get a "americanized" version . . . the original film is released with subtitles. but it seems that these horror movies get a re-cast, re-write, re-script and made into a whole new movie for english speaking audiences.

ok so I lost my point . . . but I just dont get it.

Guess the companies wouldn't get the financial return from releasing the original versions of these films in the theaters, and sad to say, but judging by the crowds I see at my local flicks the people generally would have no patience for a subtitled movie like Ringu, or Ju-on - especially since there wouldnt be any recognizable faces in there by and large (like Ms Gellar in Ju-on)

Maybe there'd be a market out there for a chain of small(ish) cinemas that cater for these sorts of films, also Anime etc, but without the "art house" pretensions.....

....and popcorn that doesnt require a down payment to buy.....

I host anime screenings all the time for the club I started up. got in touch with a few of the US distributors and have been recieving packets for the club . . . althought I wouldnt mind buying one of the old theaters here in town and turning it into an anime theater . . . buy the films to show a lot of anime, old and new, and probably some hit live action Japanese films on the big screen. thats a good lottery dream

I understand why Hollywood re-creates these films . . . I never go see them (except the ring, but I didnt know about it being originally Japanese) so I just buy the DVD of the original film . . .
