I've seen several 'create your own ribbon' sites recently. My favorite lets you create a ribbon with different backgrounds and patterns, then post it to show others. There were some really good ones, too. Unfortunately I can't find the darned site again.

Why is it that there are only two ways to "officially" support the troops? Why can we only show our support for the brave men and women out there in harm's way by either:
            a) supporting the government's policies that put them there; or
            b) putting a silly yellow or camo ribbon on our car?

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could express our true feelings, and say that the best way to support them would be to do everything in our power to make sure as many of them come home whole, safe and complete rather than in a body bag? Or, better yet, to try our best to institute policies that say that the only time men and women are put in harms way is when it is the only way to resolve the problem, after all other reasonable means have been exhausted?

I don't think it's a matter of 'official', really, just what's popular. Same as when flags sprang up like mushrooms after Sept. 11. I have to admit that, having grown up during the Viet Nam era, I'm heartened that the people may dislike or disagree about the war but aren't taking that disagreement out on the troops. And I have to say that I prefer the ribbons to those poor shredded flags flapping from car antennas.

Apologies for the flippness of this answer but the trouble is, that doesn't fit on a ribbon or even a bumper sticker. This is the age of sound bytes and blurbs, I'm afraid. As I've said here before, I think the best way to discuss things is to avoid the labels that demonize the 'other side', whichever side that might be.

There is an organization called the National Military Family Association. You can join at [email protected].

To my knowledge, this organizaion is run by and for Military Families.

This is a way to help and they send you an e-newsletter each month. One eye-opener is to understand that the government is totally screwing the families of the military (OK, they did up the dead-me benefit, but that is only one area where the shaft was being applied). Helping to take care of troops' families is one that is rewarding and appreciated. Sometimes we only think of the death toll, but there is a halted life, a missing father or mother or brother, a loss of income, and only possible death and dismemberment for EACH soldier. That's easily a million people that have been affected by a family member in Iraq SO FAR.

Ribbons are a cheap substitute for compassion.

Now that I think of it, it should be about time for me to re-up.

Anybody wanna help? You now have the address.

I found the ribbon site I mentioned earlier:

                  Support our Ribbons

or for $6.99 you can create your own:

                  Custom ribbons

                  So many possibilities....
