  • Stargate Atlantis

This is my favorite, alongside SG1, sci-fi series that is currently on air, I have to download the episodes, if I have to wait to be broadcasted in the portuguese TV it will take several years before they start it. The reasons that i've chosen this series is that it is filled with potential to be great, I love the city/ship of Atlatis, it looks awesome, after the excellent pilot episode there were some episodes that were not that good, but after the 15th episode "Before I Sleep" the quality was back on track and the two part finale was amazing, what is your opinion about this series?

    Stargate Atlantis

well I've only managed to see the pilot so far, as it was recently released on DVD in Canada - I dont get to see too much TV as I got small kids, and 6-9 months of the year I'm working at sea on ships... Anyway, I know the season 1 DVD set is to be released in October apparently, along with SG1 season 8 (dont know whether that will be the same in Europe though...)
but having said all that, SG1 and now atlantis are my favorite shows for sure - mostly excellent stories, especially SG1 with its way of putting "present day" people in futuristic situations... what I've seen of Atlantis so far is promising for sure, and I hope it lasts...

On a related note - what's everybodys opinions of the new faces in SG1? It looks interesting, but I've only read a couple of reports about Ben Browder and Beau Bridges.... I'll be waiting for the new season 9 episodes with baited breath.....

    ttfn.....

The StarGate shows I've always considered to be the best fluff you can buy. The plotlines careen from the mildly serious to the absolutely ludicrous to the shamelessly we're-way-over-budget-this-season-and-we-need-some-filler. It always does it well though. It's a ride, has no intention of being anything else, and entertains as well as it can.

SG-Atlantis seems to be continuing in this same vein, albeit with far cooler sets. I do have to wonder if somehow that one horrid show premise I heard about intergalatic vampires got folded into it. Or WAS it. From the beginning. It would not suprise me. I like it so far. It's not something I ever go out of my way to watch, but it's good popcorn fodder when it's there.

SG1 I currently have to follow, as they've sucked Ben Browder into it, and I love that goofball from Farscape far too much. I have no idea when that glow will fade off, but I expect it to last a little bit longer.

Fluff? Yeah I cant argue with that I suppose - but as you say, what it does, it deos very well - I have to admit, I was skeptical about the "vampirical" aspects of these wraith guys (do you remember the "vampires" on the buck rogers in the 25th century? and people wonder why that show got cancelled....lol!) - and after watching the Atlantis pilot, I'm still wondering whether they'll work or not (I guess they must have got it somwhat right, since they're back for season 2...)

Jeez. Movies like that make "Legend of the Rangers" look like Emmy material.

Well, we've pretty much discussed differences of opinion on 'Rangers' to death but what hurts is that the intergalactic vampires won out over JMS's Polaris.

              That...well...really sucks. (pun intended )

For the record I thought that Rangers was a good pilot and since I don't want to get into another discussion about that I'll stop.

It's just a shame that SciFi is so schitzophrenic with the quality of their shows. They can put on good ones like their Friday night line up but at the same time, put crap like that on the air.

So many people are complaining about Atlantis, that its rehashing plot lines and has two dimensional characters. To an extent, I agree, however I've found Atlantis so refreshing to watch. It's got eye candy, and great atmosphere. The Season 2 premiere was so much fun to watch, despite predictable patterns in storyline. This show is just FUN to watch, and the fact that some people can't enjoy it for that is lame! It's like Dr Who, it's cliche, cheesy but fun.

I will admit. I enjoy watching Stargate here and there . . . but I dont care for either show anymore.

I wont make snide remarks about either one, but I think Stargate SG-1 has been Milked to the point where even the characters are going "arent we dead yet?". I love the first 4 seasons! great show! but after that I believe it just took the worst turn.

they are both really fun to watch, but SG-1 has really lost a lot of face IMO and Atlantis just isn't the most well thought out series, but again, like Lexx and Red Dwarf, they are still fun to watch.

I'm guilty of watching it one in awhile (hey, sometimes, I like a comic book..too)

There for awhile- I thought that the Wraith were going to be some kind of Ancient experiment to ascend- gone awry- which caused an insatiable hunger. I guess, I was wrong.

Someone gave me the boxed set of S1 and I must say that I quite like it. It's a bit like the series-version of Back to the Future. You know : don't go into technical detail too much - a Flux Capacitor will do nicely thank you - and focus on the 'soap-aspect' of any series.

All these writers and producers owe a lot to Hillstreet Blues...

I love watching SG1 and Atlantis. I love the comedy aspects of the shows and anything that makes you laugh cant be bad. Cant wait for the new series of both to start over here again.

Unfortunately we do not get much sci-fi on the gogglebox over here and at the moment DR WHO is the best terrestrial has to offer. On the UK Sci - Fi Channel its repeats after repeats and so forth (even the horror channel i am finding shows more sci fi although very tongue in cheek ie Troma). So bring on the new Stargates i cant wait it might get me away from the PC for a bit .
I agree with Hunter cheesy but fun *****
