  • Attn JMS: BattleStar Galactica

    Mr. Straczynski,
I'm sure you're familiar with the Sci-fi channel's remake of "BattleStar Galactica." I, personally, nearly turned it off during the first 1/2 hour because it was so bad, but fortunately I kept watching. The remake does definitely have promise as a series, but it needs some serious guidance to maintain viewer interest, and to get rid of all the ridiculous mush such as that shown in the first 40 minutes or so of the pilot. It just doesn't fit in the way it was portrayed. It is my hope that you might become involved with those responsible for the new BsG, and offer them some guidance abount how to develop a decent space odyssey. As I said, there were parts that impressed me, and it has a lot of potential, but it definitely needs direction from someone different, who has a better idea about what's appropriate for that kind of plot, and what is just plain ridiculous and ruins the entertainment value. A good reference is the sci-fi message board for BattleStar Galactica, in which the problems become very apparent in the mixed reviews from the viewers. There are many, like me, who both liked and hated the pilot. There are those who turned it off without seeing it through, and they generally gave it poor reviews. Anyway, I think it would be beneficial to the upcomming series if someone like you were to intervene as an advisor at minimum.

    Warmest Regards,
    Taz

    1) As noted in the FAQ and elsewhere, JMS does not read the messages posted to this forum. He only interacts with fans via the moderated newsgroup for which the main part of this site serves as an archive.

    2) JMS cannot insinuate himself into someone else's TV project as an "advisor" on his own whim. Ronald Moore produced DS9 for many years and I'm sure he doesn't think that he needs any advice from anyone else on how to do an SF TV series. If he did think that he needed help he would have to ask JMS for help - and pay him a consulting fee for that assistance.

    3) JMS has more than enough projects that he's originated and which he has substantial control over to keep him busy. He doesn't need to kibbitz in somebody else's kitchen.

      BATTLESTAR GALACTICAÖ Miniseries Remake

      TAZOWOLF,

I'm sorry that you were not as entertained by BATTLESTAR GALACTICAÖ as I was.

Fortunately for me, I did not have the baggage of being a fan of the original version, so I was able to come to the table without expectation beyond entertainment.

Consequently, when I got more than mere entertainment, I was rewarded for the investment of my time.

I came to BG with low expectations, and even those weren't met. The miniseries was a load of crap, and is best forgotten. Of course, skiffy will be showing it non-stop soon. *rolling eyes*

I have yet to actually meet any basher of this new BG take that could adequately explain what their problems or expectations were. Other than "it sucked".

Care to take a stab at detail?

Most of the criticism I've seen of the new BG boils down to, "It isn't the same as the original" - which as far as I'm concerned, was its greatest strength.

Sloppy writing, amatuer acting, "special" effects that were the quality of something seen in the 1940s; it was over-hyped, over-advertised, and over-blown.

The script needed at least two or three more drafts, but considering the level of acting ability we saw, I don't know if anyone even noticed.

And let's not even get into the directing.

Well i enjoyed it a lot, when im looking at a movie or a series (sci-fi in particular) im not looking at the performance as i do on the story itself, and BG had a great story IMHO.

You "grok"? Is that painful? Sounds like it.

Maybe you could put a little salve on that.

                          JDM,

I agree it's best attribute was its almost total departer from the original. I would however, like to see more of the Centurion Cylons. The mini-series had its problems, but created an interesting base from which, if done correctly and with much thought, a great series could spring forth. They will have to make some obvious changes I think, but those changes can easily be explained within the storyline in a logical manner.
