film was long enough in cinema as it was. The stuff cut was non essential...The other reason is tension. We know frodo is alive, so to have the mouth of sauron tell you he isn't...it's a great scene but I can understand why they cut it for the theatrical. In the book, the way its structured the last we'd heard of frodo was when he was taken away by the orcs at the end of The Two Towers (the book). Return of the king does all the aragorn stuff first so even the reader is doubting whether frodo is alive or not.
As for the eowyn scene...again, down to pacing and keeping the time down...

Since getting EEs I wonder how could Peter Jackson cut Sauron's Mouth and Eowyn's song...

I agree. Very well done movies. It took me about 6 days to go through all the appendices (since I read the appendices in Return of the King after finishing the story), and then all 3 Extended Editions in one sitting (excluding restroom breaks in between either switching to the second disc, or switching between movies), which took 11 hours to watch through. 6 days for the appendices, 11 hours for the movies. Then I slept for 15 hours straight.
Now I just have to tackle the commentaries for all 3.

Eagerly looking forward to how the last battle plays out with it's new footage. The Mouth was always a bit I liked, and I hope it's done well.
As for super google-plex omnibus editions.... pleh.
Thought it looked and sounded brilliant. Was always a favourite section of the books for me

I'm very tempted to get this, but I'm more tempted to wait for the inevitable HD-DVD version. Mmmmmm...high definition Eowyn...
Ahem.
Besides, in a year or two they'll probably release a David-Lynchian edition, where it turns out *we're* the ones living inside the movie. LOTR is all real, I tell you!

I also thought there would be a final edition so I never considered buying the individual pieces of the trilogy, but I was actually waiting for the 20 disc extended trilogy edition with even more bonus materials...
Guess that won't happen, so I should give in and buy the whole trilogy DVD set.

Well, I thought about it a few years ago and I came to the conclusion that it would be more advantageous to wait for a trilogy box set. I was and am in no particular need to see the EE's ASAP, so it works.
