  • Mira Furlan on "Lost"

If this has been mentioned here, I don't see it with a quick scan. Mira Furlan Will be on tonight's episode of "Lost". While it's not confirmed yet, her character may well have a multi-episode arc now that more episodes have been ordered.

For those who haven't followed this (I just started a few weeks ago myself), Lost is a drama about (I think) 48 people whose plane crashed on a tropical island. In the episodes I've seen so far, generally one or two characters are sort of spotlighted and we learn why the are what they are or do what they do by means of flashbacks to their pre-crash lives.

Daniel Dae Kim plays the husband of a Korean couple who don't speak English as far as anybody knows. He had a nice part in the episode spotlighting the wife character a few weeks ago

Not science fiction exactly, but there are some unexplained phenomena and mystery. I'm enjoying it a lot.

It was mentioned in a thread somewhere. I think back on the General Discussion board.

Looking forward to her appearance. Kinda curious too - I think someone like Mira would have been in the foreground, not showing up as one of the "extras" of the 48. Er. 47. (is it 46 by now?) So I'm wondering if there's some other story here. Who knows what Sayid might find...

I thought I was getting used to this show a bit. Last week's spotlight on Sawyer schooled me otherwise. His story suprised me, and yet it fits perfectly. The scene in the clearing had me going - the sound effect on his arm... ugh, you watched it, you know. It's a great show.

Oh, she hasn't been in the background at all, from what I understand.

I liked that spotlight a lot. I missed the first few episodes but read some synopses.

If at all possible, find a recording of the pilot. Even if you know what happens, the first ten minutes, as they're panning through the aftermath, is stunning.

All the charcter stories so far have been great. I like how some of them have the twist to their tale (Jack, Sawyer, Locke), but some of them you kinda see what's coming and it resonates anyway (Kate, Sun, Charlie). They're doing a great job of mixing it up and not playing to expectations, even to someone (like me) who's guessing three commercial breaks ahead.

I'm curious as to what it'll be like once they run out of characters to show. We've got maybe four or five more tales before they're done introducing the backstories of the main people.

OK, guys, if you're not watching this show, there's something wrong with you.

Imagine Delenn in her fiery mode. Now add feral to it. A hair trigger from doing anything rash, you might say.

          Her name is now Danielle.

And they left it open for her to come back too. I thought for a minute they wouldn't.

It was SO nice to hear her voice again. There's so many things to wonder about Danielle. And there were no flashbacks for her. One of the mysteries of the island, that's for sure.

I don't usually make it to the off-topic discussion, but I followed the "Lost" thread and decided to poke around. I have to say that "Lost" has surprised me. When I first heard about it, I thought "Gilligan's Island." Not that I thought it would be slpastick comedy, but rather that I expected a long series of "we almost got off the island, but then something went wrong." Interestingly enough, one of the reasons I decided to give it a try was Daniel Dae Kim. I like to support B5 universe alumni. I'm glad he caught my attention, because I'm really enjoying the show. There's some wonderful character work, and they seem to be doing a great job at balancing the tension of the show. You're always getting a few answers, so you can feel like you're going somewhere, but there are always more questions around the next bend. It keeps you thinking.

Of course, that has me very worried. An intelligent show with good character development, interesting stories, and a number of mysteries that last well beyond a single episode. Add to that the fact that it's showing on one of the big 4, and you've got a recipe for canellation. Still, there's always hope!

BTW, it may not be space opera, but IMO it has a very strong speculative fiction component going on. I expect it to get stringer as time goes on, too. Impossible plane crashes; a constantly broadcast SOS from a rather large island and no one seems to hear it; visions that lead to a coffin and safe shelter; miraculous healing; unnaturally large creatures. I'd definitely class it as SF at this point.

Oh, yes, and it really was fanatstic to see (and hear) Mira again. What a great character, too!

Lost made big news back when it premiered, because it got huge ratings, above and beyond even what was expected of it as an assumed hit show. This and Desperate Housewives have spurred on the revival of ABC. The rest of the first season of Lost is already locked in. Unless something drastic happens, season 2 is practically a lock, and smart money - and presuming none of the talent leaves - says the show will be around for a full run.

Smart money also says that Lost may be the savior of Alias when it comes back on the air, now scheduled right after Lost. That makes a two-hour block of Abrams fantasy shows. Alias has always struggled, and has only been around this long because it was the only noteworthy show ABC had.

What I'm hearing is that Lost is a huge hit and has already gotten the order for the second half of the first season to be shot.

It's funny, in a sad sort of way. Back when JMS was fighting with TNT, they told him 'nobody wants all that backstory' when the didn't like "Path of Sorrows". Now here's a series that seriously shows backstory on it's characters and it's a hit.

                  Sigh...

Who can figure what will be a hit and what won't. The TV execs have certainly proved THEY can't!

I watched "Lost" tonight for the first time after reading the posts here by Jan and others and I was impressed. A very good show to be shure. I'm glad I looked into this when I did as next week ABC will start the series from the begining thus I wont miss an episode now.

At the end of tonights episode a couple of the characters found what appears to be possibly a trap door or something. When they tapped on it with their knives it certainly sounded hollow. If it was just a piece of sheet metal debree then it would not have sounded like that. It could be a container or a trap door, either way the sound of the taping was ment to mean something.

I guess we'll have to wait until Feburary to see what it really is. Also I was glad to see that they didn't kill off the guy that played Merry in LOTR character. He's a good actor and lends his merrit to the show. Overall what a great cast and a well written show from what I could tell by one episode.

Thanks again for posting the refferal!

SciFiRanger, you might want to think about spoiler warnings and space when mentioning particulars of a show, particularly when it's in first run. Not everyone gets to see it on the night it's broadcast. A couple of your remarks lessened the daramtic tension at the end.

We're in full agreement on the show. I'm finding it very entertaining. I can't believe we'll be left hanging here, though!

Well I guess that was pretty uncool of me.

I didn't even think about the possiblity that the show would be broadcast on another night. When I googled the series it said it would be on Wedensday evenings at 8:00pm thus I figured all had seen the epeisode by the time I made the post.

In the future I will be sure to mention the posibility of Spoilers if I plan to reviel any of the plot. Once again please accept my apology for my error.

Your apology is most warmly accepted. It was really not that big a deal. By the way, it wasn't broadcast on a different night -- I record and watch at a later date due to scheduling and the desire to skip over those pesky commercials. (Don't let the advertisers know! )

For anyone (er, U.S. bound anyway) who has not started watching this great show, tonight ABC will be re-airing the 2 hour pilot. It is the beginning of the rerun season. Bad news for the faithful fans, great news for all the potential converts. *mad cackle*

Seriously, the first ten minutes should make it very worth your while.
