  • The Nightwatch Program

San Francisco, November 1, 2004- A mob of Arab students at San Francisco State University attacked a group of College Republicans on the San Francisco State University campus at noon today during a ôTurnout the Voteö event in front of the campus student union building.

Derek Wray, President of the SFSU College Republicans, told Front Page Magazine that an angry mob of Palestinian students attacked the clubÆs table, as well as individual members of the Republican club who were handing out pro-Bush/Cheney campaign materials. According to Wray, campus police were nearby, but ôjust stood around watching and, instead of protecting the College Republican students from the mob that was pouring drinks on our table and materials, and even physically assaulting our members, only suggested that the campus Republicans leave rather than arrest those responsible for the violence.ö

Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

Please explain what this has to do with Nightwatch?

Nightwatch was a *government sponsored* program that was interested in controlling the populace through fear and intimidation. The article you link to is regarding an isolated incident at one university and is very slanted.

So what? Again, I'd like to know what this has to do with Nightwatch? So far, all I'm seeing is articles that deal with current issues that have nothing to do with governmental control.

          Nice read.

          What was the problem again?

Please show how that article is slanted. I see NO personal viewpoints/opinions, just peronal statements of fact. I see facts stated by individuals/witnesses. Having been the object of abuse myself, I recognize the stated pattern of violence in this instance, thereby causing me to believe it as true.

The problem is that most 'brown shirt' movements are a result of reactionary individuals being fed up with the way they are being treated. The left is pushing(literally) the right to action. We DON'T want to open that door. And besides what right do foreigners have to involve themselves in our politics. IMO they are trying to push us to civil war. Every rational enemy we have knows that an outside force will only unite us(Pearl Harbor/911 syndrome) and that to fail/fall we will have to rot from the inside out(Roman Empire).

As for what this has to do with Nightwatch...I see the parallel. The most striking issue I have with the GUPS vs. Turn Out the Vote article is with the security forces being complacent.

This response, no offense, truly, seriously, deeply frightens me and creates within me a more profound concern for the future of our country.

How can a B5 fan, someone claiming understanding of what that show so wonderfully depicted, make such harsh and racial statements?

I am terribly dismayed right now and saddened for the future of my beloved country.

              CE

PS: It is slanted because it depicts only the Rep. students point of view, not the other side. This is what we refer to in the news biz as biased (and bad) reporting.

perhaps you should ask yourself the same question first.

Perhaps. But only one point of view was presented and if you read it carefully, you'll see that there were more inflammatory terms used than were probably necessary to tell the story. Think back to "The Illusion of Truth" and recognize how what people actually said was slanted to fit what Clark's regime wanted portrayed. I firmly believe that *every* article and news report should be looked at with "What do these people want me to think?" and "What other way could these incidents be viewed?"

However, there are *many* levels of security forces. Nightwatch was specifically a top-level mandated program. Which isn't to say that what was reported isn't a matter of concern, it's just a much lower level.

I'd like to propose something for people to try. In posts having a political/moral/religious topic, it'd be interesting for people to try to write their posts without using lables like right, left, conservative, liberal, Democrat, Republican...well, you get the idea. If we can debate ideas without using lables, perhaps we'll actually be communicating.

Depends (or Pampers, if you prefer) . How fondly or un-fondly do you expect to use the term?

it's always been used quite lightly back home in scotland or here in ireland...much like they'd use eejit over here (cf Father Ted).

It would be a fresh change for once, to discuss an idea or an event without the 50 million tons of baggage attached, the 100 million assumptions that labels bring added in.

                          Does that include 'muppet'?
I have no problem being labelled a Fraggle.

Your own statement is contradictory - a personal statement is indeed a viewpoint. And this article only has one - that of the Republican who says he was attacked. Any facts later presented - like the 25,000 terrorist attacks that were nowhere near SFSU - are only in support of that singular viewpoint. The police chief is in meetings and can't comment - you can take that as convenient or not, for either side. Any comments from the attacking Palestinians are not even looked for.

                          One viewpoint. That's a bias.

Wow, guess so! To me, a muppet is a particular kind of puppet! Learn something every day!

In that case, my preference wouldn't be to use the term but I was thinking more in terms of the ones like the examples I used which people may think are defined the same by everyone but in reality seldom are.
