    Nichelle Nichols diagnosed with dementia

    While I'm not a fan of TMZ digging for this sort of thing, I'm still saddened by this news.

    "Star Trek" legend Nichelle Nichols has reportedly been diagnosed with dementia.

    TMZ obtained documents filed in the 85-year-old's conservatorship in which Dr. Meena Makhijani, who specializes in osteopathic medicine, states that Nichelle has "moderate progressive dementia." Nichelle has been Dr. Makhijani's patient for several years.

    Court documents also stated that the actress "has major impairment of her short-term memory and moderate impairment of understanding abstract concepts, sense of time, place and immediate recall," TMZ said.
    The times I've seen her at cons she's always been stately and gracious.
    "As empathy spreads, civilization spreads. As empathy contracts, civilization contracts...as we're seeing now.

    The times I've seen her at cons she's always been stately and gracious.

      I saw her at a comicon in Dublin in 2015 and it seemed fairly clear there was definitely some dementia there, it may have been a bad day but with every question she was asked she kept giving the same actor but it was incredibly painful to watch and quite difficult.

      So yeah it's a progressive condition, my Mum has it and she's mostly gone, for nearest and dearest it's heartbreaking.

        I unfortunately know Dementia all too well as I worked as a Nurse in a Nursing Home for over 15 years.

        On the positive side, it's a blessing that Nichelle didn't get early onset Dementia which can happen to people in their 40's and 50's which is scary. One of the best things I've learned over the years is that when being with someone with Dementia is to not only be supportive, but also learn to have one hell of a sense of humor. I've always said that I would rather see those who have Dementia expend their frustrations (and there's a lot of frustration when you can't remember) on humor as opposed to anger.

        I think a sense of humor comes naturally for Nichelle which will help her and those around her.

          I am a bit late to this news, but they are till very sad. And just by coincidence I bought her biography Beyond Uhura this summer.
