Dana Reeve (Chris Reeve's widow) was shown a picture of the "new" Superman and she commented on the black boots and cape and "how much he looked like Chris"
Probably not a look they avoided.
I can't see anyone else in the role, either. I also loved the way they incorporated Chris Reeve into the Smallville storyline
