The two Total Recalls

Not having seen the last version of Total Recall I recently did a tandem watch of both the new and the old version.

I have always liked the Arnold one, today most for nostalgic reasons and the fact that I like the mutant version of Mars, but I was surprised that the new version was ok to. Sure, it had its fill of over the top CGI stuff, but on the whole it worked.

Unfortunately I have not read the original story though.

Any one here who have any particular likes and dislikes regarding these movies, or the original?

the original movie is a classic, when blockbusters were exactly that. huge sets, huge props, huge stars and put together in an intelligent and compelling manner.

the second is also of its time, it crystalises exactly what is wrong with movies now, story was bad, rushed, the actors where miscast horribly purely because they were considered hot property at the time, and the overeliance on terrible cgi just made it feel like watching someone playing a computer game.

the producers of the original cared about the final product, the producers of the remake simply didnt.

Ombuds, I do agree on many points, but miscast? I kind of like Kate B though, so that might color my judgement.

well, its all opinions i guess. the original had ronnie cox i think it was as cohaagen and ironside as richter. they made an effective baddly double team, and dangerous psyco henchman and the cold replitian final boss

this time we had a middle aged walter white who needed to wear some kind of body armour just to have a fist fight against the far bigger and stronger collin farrell. which just looked terrible, it looked like a big guy beating up an old small guy. and thats before we even have to sit through another of colin farrells, 'oh look im so cool i just woke up and have a hangover, cos im so cool. btw im irish, isnt that cool' non performances.

anyway, i didnt like the film, poorly written, if even written at all, characters were a mess.

then there was the elevator thing.

this is what i like about sci fi, the good sci fi has clever ideas with potential into which some thought that has gone into. Ideas that have been postulated in academic circles and given serious enquiry.

then we have the total recall remake and a lift that somehow just falls through the earths molten core with no problems (or explanation funnily enough). It was just lazy, lazy stupid garbage (similar to 'the core' if you remember that film, although i actually didnt find it so bad).

I own the 1990 movie on DVD. I haven't seen the remake movie. However I did read the original short story many years ago. A lot of what was in the 1990 movie, like everything on Mars, wasn't in the short story.

Cox and Ironside is indeed hard to beat and I agree 100% with the elevator thingy. Just strange.

The short story is 'We can Remember it for you Wholesale' by Philip K Dick. There are a few short story collections that contain this. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a PDF copy out there on the world wide intarwub.

The original film is good silly fun. Bears little resemblance to the source material really. No desire to see the remake.
