  • Top 10 movies

    Hi,

It might be fun to see which SF-movies the community likes most.

If we all post our top 10 SF-movies I will put a rankingsystem behind it(number 1 = 10 points, number 2 = 9 points etcetera) and ultimately publish the outcome. Babylon-5 is excluded from entry as there has not been a Cinematic movie yet. The four tv-films don't count, this is about theater-movies.

To give you a list of movies : http://www.fact-index.com/l/li/list_...ion_films.html

    To kick it off :

    1. Blade Runner

    2. 12 Monkeys

    3. Soylent Green

    4. Close Encounters of the Third Kind

    5. Alien

    6. The Matrix

    7. Event Horizon

    8. The Lawnmower Man

    9. The Andromeda Strain

    10. THX 1138

Gotta be science fiction strictly, or are we allowed some "genre" wiggle room for fantasy and such?

Just ask because your list looks like it. If not, I'll go back and add obvious nerd stuff like LOTR.

    1. Contact

    2. The Matrix

    3. Star Wars (Ep4)

    4. The Abyss

    5. Dark City

    6. 12 Monkeys

    7. Blade Runner

    8. The Iron Giant

    9. Spaceballs

    10. The Fifth Element

(Serenity will probably make #3 when it comes out, and bump the list accordingly)

No you're right, I mean real SF-movies, no fantasy. We could make another thread for that later on.

I'll tally the votes every day or so to keep the first post updated with the results-to-date.

I'll suggest you don't update so often, let several responses accumulate before tallying.

I'll have to think of my answer... I rarely make top-10 lists. Matrix and sequels are in my bottom 10 though...

Its difficult because people's interpretation of what is 'pure' sci-fi differs.

          1. Alien

          2. Star Wars (A New Hope)

          3. Blade Runner

          4. 2001

          5. The Abyss

          6. Close Encounters

          7. Star Trek 2 (Wrath of Kahn)

          8. Time Bandits

          9. Outland

          10. Hardware

Others worthy of mention : Terminator, Tron, Titan A.E, The Thing, Capricorn One

Yeah, I rarely make top ten lists of movies either. I just tend to take the good ones on their own terms as they come along. They affect you for but a moment, but by the next day the impression is worn off. And boy, watching a movie many times makes you want to forget it even faster : P

"Good art is like good wine - it gets even better with time."

Forget the source of the quote, and it's probably off. But I'll be damned if I ever forget or want to forget some of these.

I actually don't like lists either. But it's been a while since I've done one, so... *shrug* I try.

If I would have to draw up that list now it would probably be different. It is indeed no more than an approximation. Perhaps a Top 100 would be better but hey! I'd have to buy a calculator...

What I do think is, that we may get somewhat of an insight in what B5-diehards typically like.

                  7. Event Horizon

Now that was a wierd sci fi movie, but it was pretty entertaining.

Wow, I always used to think that Battlefield: Earth couldn't be as bad as people said, but it was on SFC the other day and man...how rotten! Travolta at his worst, and that is saying something.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

                            1. Star Wars: A New Hope
                            2. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
                            3. Star Wars: The Return of Jedi
                            4. Dune
                            5. The Fifth Element
                            6. Aliens
                            7. Matrix
                            8. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
                            9. Blade Runner
                            10. Jurassic Park

In my opionion, Battlefield Earth wasn't as bad as many people claim it to be. I own it on DVD, and I think it's a decent movie. The same goes for the new Star Wars movies, although I can see why people are upset with Jar Jar. Starship Troopers is also a very entertaining movie. It's so easy for people to talk bad about Science Fiction movies (especially "Space" Fiction).

                              Dune

One of my favorites , it has to rate at the top of my list

The 84 movie with patrick stewart.

I am torn up over it though, there is so many good ones to mention you really could go on and on.......
