Doctor Who - 50 years today

Today I will be watching Doctor Who stuff only. What else can I do on The Day of the Doctor
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the longest scifi TV show still running (if a bit haltingly at the moment).

Having seen the "prequel" webisodes - I like "Night of the Doctor" the best - I look forward to seeing tonight's episode on BBC, "Day of the Doctor".

What am I doing today?

An hour on the treadmill where I watch most of my favorite sci-fi and do my best thinking

- then off to work in the imaging dept. of a printing company and provide some graphic support too.

Watched the "Day of The Doctor" - and the after party show.
Enjoyed it greatly.

Glad it was enjoyed by all.

I remain somewhat mystified by the appeal of modern Dr. Who. I watched it as a kid, and quite enjoyed it, but could never connect with the series in its modern incarnation. I tried, but it's not what I want from my TV SF. It just seems a bit naff, cheap and silly.

I never saw it in its original form. Well, almost never. The few times I saw it was on public television and I didn't know enough about it to understand about regeneration so nothing ever made sense. My first real exposure was with the so-called 'nu-Who' and I've liked it since I first watched.

I think the thing is to not take it too seriously, ever, because it doesn't take itself too seriously. Yeah, there are some really serious episodes and sometimes great drama. But many others are just excuses for running around a lot and pointing a silly screwdriver.

For me the feel is a lot like the original Trek. It's an ensemble show that uses a fantastic means of transport to do lots of different kinds of stories. And the fact that the ensemble changes regularly keeps it fresh.

So now I've been through three Doctors and I've got a favorite Doctor of my own.

BTW...translation please? Does 'naff' mean cheap and silly? Or is that a third adjective to go along with cheap and silly? Two countries, separated by a common language... Thanks.

Naff generally means 'not very good'.

Each to their own with regards new Who! If people enjoy it, that's great. I just can't get excited enough about it to invest time in it. I would be intrigued to watch Dr. Who from the very start, to see the progression its made over the years. I have some fond childhood memories of watching the show. No idea what Doctor that would have been!

I STILL need to watch all of Blakes 7... so should probably do that first.

That's exactly what I have been saying about DrWho for a long time. I had seen *some* reruns on the BBC, but did not get into it that much. That changed when the new Who started. Now I want to see more of the older stuff. There is more than enough material there

Ubik : I have only seen season 1 of Blake's 7, and should probably watch the rest as well.

Just got Netflix, and TV streaming/videoteque from my ISP, so for the moment I have more than enough material to watch.
I also stated - and got through the first season of Farscape before that deluge of TV entered my home. I like what I have seen so far, but want to get to watch some of the streaming stuff before it disappears.

Farscape definitely improves as it progresses. It's a fun series and I like all the Jim Henson Company FX / Puppets.
