So, I went to see RED 2 today. Like the first, I thought it was a very entertaining Spy Thriller/Action/Comedy Popcorn movie. What I don't understand is why, like RED before it, this movie did not do better at the box office here in the U.S. RED did better, but was not nearly a hit. I know this sequel only came about due to international box office numbers and home viewing numbers via on demand and blu-ray sales. So if people did end up seeing RED outside the theaters, why didn't they come out for this sequel? It is very strange to me. I am very surprised that The Conjuring more than doubled Red 2's B.O. numbers here in the states. I mean, it is full of stars with box office appeal, even though they are a more mature lot. In my opinion, which I think many will agree with, three of the top twenty film actors are in this movie - Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich, and my beloved Helen Mirren. So where was the audience this weekend? Who has answers? And don't say The Conjuring just because it is the truth. And yes it is also true that it was up against a lot of competition from this weekend and weekends past. I am just disappointed. I really hoped it would be a hit this time around and guarantee a third installment, but now I'll have to wait a long time to see what happens when the other numbers role in.

The first Red film was great. One of the rare instances where the film easily surpassed the quality of the comic it was based on. Red (the comic) by Warren Ellis was a short three issue mini series so provided a basic premise for the film which they then had to flesh out.

This is precisely why the film worked so well, they took the basic idea and just ran with it. It worked SO much better than adaptations I've seen of more involved long form comics (Watchmen, V for Vendetta, LOEG, etc). Looking forward to seeing the sequel as the first film was so much fun.

Yes, Helen Mirren totting machine guns was amazing!

Rather than start a new thread I'll just say that as much as I loved Red 2, I found R.I.P.D. to be very disappointing. It was a very blah hack job a few other popular movies, especially Men In Black.

Not seen or heard about R.I.P.D, I guess it's another comic book spin off? A quick google search suggests it bombed pretty badly.

Not as badly as Red 2, but Red 2 might have better legs for upcoming weekends in the long run.

Helen Mirren has the age and looks to play the Queen. She is a gun toting grandmother. Taking you girl friend to watch her is not a method of seduction, it is the equivalent of introducing your girl friend to the family. Good behaviour required.

RED and RED2 are mainly for demos. above the 18-49 (Yes, I know we're NOT talking about TV here.). The stars are mainly known by and attract those older than 49, like me. I haven't seen a movie in the theater since January 2004 (Lord of the Rings: Return of the King). I tend to BUY the movies on DVD if I think there's a good chance that I'm going to like it. Otherwise, I rent it via Netflix, and if I like it, I buy it later. If I were to go to see a movie in the theaters now, I'd be reaching for my remote during the movie (to rewatch especially good parts.) because I'm so used to watching DVDs. I think most of the movie theater going crowd are younger than the demo. that's attracted to RED and RED 2. hence the lower than say the Twilight franchise, RED/RED 2 box office figures.
