I think she did have a monopoly. I am pretty sure they knew going in that this block is where it all originated and she controlled it.

Urban was great, so I would love to see an improved sequel. I had high hopes for Dredd that it did not live up to. I somewhat enjoyed it, but I wanted to love it and I didn't.

I agree that it does definitely deserve a sequel. Not sure what the global profit was on this one, or how well it performed overall. It could happen if there's enough fan support behind it and the numbers work.

I know Dredd did very poorly in the states, but I am not sure about home video sales.

And I saw PACIFIC RIM yesterday. LOVED the visuals, but the lead actor was a big let down as was the finale. The ending just felt underwhelming to me.

I also saw A Good Day To Die Hard on DVD. That was just sad. It might have been a decent stand alone action movie, but making it part of the Die Hard Franchise was a HUGE mistake.

I just watched Dredd again. I definitely enjoyed it more the second time around. Because I enjoy certain aspects of the Stallone version I think I was tainted when I watched this the first time. The second time around was a much more enjoyable experience. And for clarification, Ma-Ma controlled manufacture and distribution of Slow-Mo. The facility is in Peach Trees and they talk about adding new blocks to supply.

Also for those who might be interested, I picked up Dredd on 3D Blu-Ray at Best Buy yesterday for $12.99. This single disc edition contains both the 3D & 2D versions.

I can't belive it's two years since I posted this thread. And now, with my necromancy, I will bring it back. Ha, it's Looney's fault!


A little preface, there haven't been too many movies I've called my "favorite" (before 2008). Honestly, I have a hard time listing some recent movies as favorite, especially through the 90s and early 2000s.

Well, I've seen a bunch of favorite movies lately, Dredd is not top of the pack, but it's certainly up there. I think I watched this about 5 or 6 times since I bought the dvd. It's one of my favorites. My only slight complaint is they relied a bit too much on the Slomo effect to wow people. Everything else was good to great. They went with a less direct interpretation of the visual but a much closer to the heart of the character and the setting. To explain my last sentence, the look is as direct a translation but they got the characters and setting much much much (x 1000) better than that "other" film. Karl Urban was Great! I don't know if he knew the character ahead of time or is just a studious person, but he almost certainly researched and even more, paid attention. He is Dredd. He had that subtle humor that so subtle you might not even think of it as humor, (not a good thing for everybody, but it's 100% Dredd)
Anderson was good. I thought it was strange to not have Psi-Judges as an existing unit, but Dredd and Anderson are actually quite young in this, they're old birds in the books now. Dredd is one of the rare comics where the characters actually age, and Dredd is getting really old, so the the movie is set when he's young.

Even though the movie is mostly set in one citiblock, I think it sufficently demonstrates how huge MegaCity is, as there are hundreds of those, plus other types of buildings. They didn't show any of the cursed earth, but he mentioned it, actually his little narration was great. There was so much that was done just as I'd have wanted. Urban even declared "I am the Law" but he did it so well, Assholone screwed everything up. I'm glad we even got this movie. I wish they would have promoted just a little more, I don't think most people knew about it, and what little promotion seemed to center around it's "3D". 3d is ok but if that's your main selling point, well that's a problem. Like they didn't expect much of their own movie. Even if you're not invested in the characters, like me, it's still a nice little action flick.

Have you seen 'The Raid'? That was made at roughly the same time as Dredd. Premise is similar, or at least the running combat in a tower block is. Also, greatly enjoyed 'The Raid'. Many people have accused one of ripping off the other, which is definitely not the case.

Both have merit.

Speaking of The Raid, I hated the sequel. I thought it lacked all of the originality of the first one. The plot seemed like a rip-off of ever other movie of its type so maybe they did somehow swipe the plot from Dredd, though I believe The Raid came out in 2011 and Dredd late 2012.

Anyway back to Dredd. This movie has become one that I definitely feel the need to sit down and watch every few months or so. It is one of the films my friends and I always bring up as needing a sequel. Such a shame people didn't go see it in the theaters. I think we can all agree that there needs to be a Dredd 2 and we want to see Urban in more starring roles. He is my favorite part of the new Trek movies. I loved Almost Human. I thought he was great in Red and I've thought he was good in everything I've seen him in. Okay he couldn't save Pathfinder (2007), but no one could.
