  • Doctor Who - SPOILERS!!

I just finished watching Seasons 5 & 6 via Netflix DVDs, and have only the 2010 & 2011 Christmas specials left.

    Special S5 25/Dec/10 "A Christmas Carol" (61 min)
Special S6 25/Dec/11 "The Doctor, The Widow, and The Wardrobe"

    Is a seventh season planned?

Indeed, they are currently in the midst of filming. The new companion has been announced - she will be introduced in the Christmas Special. There will be six episodes total shown this year, including that special. The second half of the season will be shown next year, along with a full eighth season, and possibly other specials.

Is there a reason for having more Doctor Who shown next year? Absolutely. It's the 50th anniversary of the series. BBC is gearing up for its biggest DW year ever. You won't be able to escape it, don't even try.

She's been talking about it since shortly after season 5 wrapped. She said she wants her character to be killed off, on-screen, so that she wouldn't follow in the Rose/Martha/Donna tradition of making one repeat appearance after another. When she's done with the part, she's done and no looking back.

She may regret that, come next year, but it IS tradition for the companion (or companions) to come and go frequently. By the time she does depart, along with Rory, she'll have been the continuous companion longer than any other in the modern series.

The records for longest companion in order are:

Sarah Jane Smith - 3 complete seasons plus 2 stories
Useless - 3 complete seasons, all with the 3rd Doctor
Jamie - 1 story short of 3 full seasons

and in 4th place is a tie with Tegan, aka the Mouth With Legs, and K9 Mark II, both are two stories shy of 3 full seasons.

I'm extremely glad to see Karen Gillan leave. It's not necessarily her fault (much of the blame lies with the writers), but I find Amy to be the most self-centered, unpleasant character I've seen in a while. She sets my teeth on edge. Donna may have started out flawed, but at least she grew, and we weren't constantly encouraged to admire her for being a narcissistic nymphomaniac.

She tried to kiss the Doctor twice. And she had sex with her husband, enough to make a baby, and other people knew about it. I understand that in Britain, that qualifies.

Nymphomaniac is sarcastic overstatement, but there's a tendency for Amy to be rather interested in shagging people (including herself) in a way that I find infinitely tedious. It's particularly bad in the beginning of the 5th season, where it totally poisons my impression of her relationship with Rory (you love Rory but you're asking the Doctor for a quick fuck? "I wasn't thinking of anything so long-term!" seriously?).

I think we're supposed to think that it makes her a "strong and free-spirited" woman, but if she was a man and Rory was her weak-willed girlfriend who never knows whether her parter is about to run away with anyone they meet, well, I don't think we'd admire this relationship so much.

Beyond the fact that she's good-looking, I see very little that is appealing about Amy. She doesn't seem to be terribly interested in the world, she isn't particularly intelligent, and she's extremely selfish. I don't find her to be pleasant company and I can't wait for her to be gone.

I have to admit that I've found it kind of a refreshing change from the usual 'pining for the Doctor' we were subjected to from Rose and Martha. And really, even (especially?) in the best relationships/marriages, there's usually the 'List' of people it's *never* gonna happen with but if the opportunity *did* arise, there's pre-permission to shag. I figured the Doctor was probably just on Amy's list.

You can all hit me with fish, but I don't want to lose Rory, I think he's cool. And if Amy leaves, I'd reckon she'd take him down with him.
