  • Fav Sci-fi series that is not B5

I know this has been done before, but it is always good for a discussion. A polite discussion that does not denigrate people's choices please or a sleestak will come visit you.

We shall take B5 as a given.

My choices - in no particular order for best

    The Twilight Zone
    Star Trek TOS
    Farscape
    Firefly

Honourable mentions for whatever reason mostly the fun / cheese element

    Quark
    Space Above and Beyond
    Battlestar Galactica
    Starlost
    Red Dwarf
    Starblazers

    Cheers

    Mac

          Honorable Mentions:

V and V: The Final Battle
Which I mention because I originally saw it as the Spanish dubbed syndication version, unimaginatively re-titled as "Invasi¾n Extraterrestre," in 30 min installments, so it felt like a series to me.
It was later shown as 1 hour package with "V: the series" (which was disappointing in comparison, no wonder the characters were dropping out of the series constantly).

I liked Battlestar Galactica back in the days too... honorable mention for old times sake, same for Star Trek... and for Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
Believe it or not, I enjoyed the adventures of the Seaview just as much as those of the Enterprise and I did watch them in the same time period.

In this company I suppose "The Prisoner" & "Farscape" are going to come top of most everybody's list (as they do mine).

However, I'd also like to put in a word for a short -lived series (I think it only lasted one season) called "Prey"(nothing to do with the current Michael Crichton book).

An isolated population pass through the same evolutionary bottleneck that gave rise to Homo Sapiens, resulting in a new human species - who are our predators.

With a female molecular boilogist/geneticist as a hero, I suppose I should never have expected it would last for long.

            Anyone else remember it?

Before anyone notices the typo, a 'boilogist' is a scientist dedicated to the study of boils.

That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

I love The Prisoner and Blake's 7, and have a fondness for the cheese-fest that is Sapphire and Steel.

As for US offerings, I enjoy Trek from time to time in its various incarnations, but I _loved_ Odyssey 5 and Firefly.

I don't class "The Twilight Zone" in the same way I would B5, Trek, Battlestar Galactica, etc. "Twilight Zone" would go more with Tru Calling, X Files, Dead Like Me, etc. But of course I loved classic TZ!

(By the way, did I mention here that I'm going back to my natal name in the sf community? Well, I am! Just call me "Amy"!)

When I first read about O5's premise a few months before its premiere, I thought it sounded cool. Was it a really good show? Why was it canceled?

Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

It was a _really_ good show, and it was cancelled because...Showtime sucks! Seriously!

I was a bit disappointed when the show started, and it _seemed_ to be space-based sf, but then after the pilot it became purely Earth-based, a la X Files. I had _really_ wanted me some space-based sf! But then the season progressed, and it was pretty interesting...and then I saw the unaired (in the US) episodes, and it was REALLY interesting...and I was ready to throw a brick at Showtime for canning it before I could learn what was going to happen to the Earth and the O5 crew!

It had a great cast (including Buckaroo Banzai himself, and the great, underrated Brit character actor, Sebastian Roche). Manny Coto was the writer and producer - which is why I have some slight hope for Enterprise this season (he's now the show runner there).

Yes. Mostly because Channel 4 showed it in the old late night Babylon 5 slot.

I know Showtime sucks, but what were their reasons for shitcanning it? The ratings?

I read about the premise and I knew that after the initial setup, it wouldn't be a spaceship show. It was going to be an XF-type show with a central mystery (i.e. who blew up Earth).

An old (~1967?) german short series called `Raumpatrouille Orion`(~Spacepatroll Orion) . It was in black and white, plays in the year 3000, the spaceships on earth started their actions form a space-harbour under the oceans. They use many unusual things for decorating the set, for example an iron, some water taps/faucets, special version of pencil-sharpener ... The heros are a captain and a litlle crew, who get a disciplinary transfer ┤cause they have problems to do their actions in a way their chefs would do it. But they rescued often the earth...
It┤s not ambitious but very funny ( one dance style is back to back) but also interesting.
                          Bye

                            Fun question!

                            Firefly
                            Star Trek: TOS
                            Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.
                            Stargate: SG1

                            Honorable Mention:
Jerimiah (What I saw of it)
Battlestar Galactica (Definitely pre Earth-bound, motorcycle dudes )
                            Space, Above and Beyond
"That was the law, as set down by Valen. Three castes: worker, religious, warrior."

Has to be the old bbc series of 'The HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy'. Whether it be the TV or radio series is up to you as they were both superb!
