  • Happy, Merry, Joyous, Blessed

Just want to wish each and every one of you the very best of whatever holidays you might happen to celebrate.

If 2011 left anything to be desired, here's hoping that we'll all get that and more in 2012 - whether it ends or not.

Seriously, thanks to all of you for fun times hanging out in this little corner of the web.

    All best,
    Jan

Wishing you the same, Jan, and sharing those wishes with all the people here.

I am convinced that the world will not end in 2012, but just in case, let's see if we can get Jan above 10,000 before it does!

You, too Jan! And everybody. Don't forget, it's Festivus today, unless you want, then so what.

I really love Christmas, it's my favorite time of year, plus I'm looking forward to that Doctor special.

I don't think there's anything more to the Mayan calendar ending than it's ending. What do you normally do when it's the end of the calendar? Get a new one, maybe? I think if the original Mayans were still around they would just start another one, but I am no expert. Plus I read recently that there could have been a translation error and the actual date may have already happened up to 50 years ago or my not be until 5 years from now. So like most things, 2012 is arbitrary.

But it's only 100 years to 2112! Hold the Red Star proudly high in hand!

          Happy holidays to everyone too.

I look forward to Jan's next 1000 posts. She is a such a rich source of information and insights. She has expanded my appreciation of B5 and is really fun to have an exchange with.

That being said, I'm going to call it a night and wait for a man with a white beard to show up at my house who, more than likely, did not write 110 episodes of my favorite show.
What a wonderful world you live in. -

So, in important Christmas matters...what'd everyone think of The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe?

I disliked it. Felt like 1940s Italian/German propaganda to me - the wartime mother who protects her children at all costs, her whole life defined by nothing except being a walking womb (no sense of wonder at seeing another world, no morals when dealing with other people, just the obsession with her children and husband). The forest creatures were awesome visually, and even though I dislike Amy I was touched at the end, but as a whole... no, thank you.

I did recently watch the previous Christmas special which, while flawed, was much more moving and original.

I liked it a lot. It did what a Christmas special should do - leave one feeling good and it also had some decent character progression from the Mom going from ditsy to determined to the Doctor finding his closest friends to be with at Christmas.

I haven't cared much for the current Doctor, especially this season, but the last couple of episodes have redeemed him some in my eyes.

Thanks Jan, the only thing I lacked this year was a Vorlon for the top of my Koshmas tree.

                      Check-out my Christmas photos

I liked the Dr Who Christmas special. My only concern was what happened to Anderson, they didn't mention him again. Was he rescued?

Another thing that bothers me is that I don't get to see those little "prequels" that they've been making for some of the episodes lately, there was supposed to be one for this one showing the Doctor on the ship causing the destruction.

I think it's interesting how the series has progressed to the point where the alien threat to Earth isn't the plot anymore, it's just a macguffin to get the story started. As if the Doctor defending Earth is such a given so let's not spend any time on it as he's always defeating the "alien invasion" of the week. This can be good but also seems to put you in a place where there really isn't any threat at all and there really isn't much suspense or "tension". I understand that no one is really going to destroy Earth in an episode but it seems like it isn't even possible anymore, like they used to have a shot at it but now why bother. I'm really looking forward to next season. Of course, when you only actually watch 2 shows that are currenly broadcast (not old ones on dvd) you do look forward to them. (My other show is Futurama, nothing else is of interest to me on TV now)

I also haven't seen the prequels, just discovering that they've been made. It's kinda annoying >< I just want to watch the show not have to work to find important details that were left out of it.

As far as alien invasions just being the "set-up". It really is interesting. A lot of shows, games, whatever, suffer from what's called "power creep" and "Complication creep". It's unavoidable because in order to keep the excitement up, you have to either make something more powerful or more complicated than before. With the rich history of Doctor Who, it's almost impossible to make something more powerful at this point without bringing back all of the timelords, so we're stuck with complication creep. It's starting to be detriment to the show, and they do need to do something to reset expectations at some point. I think that's a lot of why people have something down on Matt Smith as doctor, that it's more the complication creep factor in the plot going on than it is his performance. It also forces them to rely on the show being a comedy.

I think Doctor Who has been suffering that for some time now. Especially since the big-ass invasions don't seem to leave behind a lot in the way of memories, and a couple of days after their planet was almost destroyed by <insert alien threat here> or <insert alien phenomenon here> appeared in their sky or <insert alien power here> took over their minds/bodies/children, everyone on Earth is all like "Aliens? What? Of course I don't believe in aliens!"

After a while, that makes the alien threat of the week seem a little less dangerous than usual.
