  • Firefly..yea or nay?

Firefly's boxed set is a steal price. Should I buy it? Is the show good, does it have rewatchability value and will it make me sick that it got cancelled?

So, yea or nay? Buy it?
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

I say yes, you should get it. I never watched Firefly when it was on tv, so I was hesitant to buy it. I'm actually now kind of glad I didn't watch it when it was on tv knowing how FOX showed the episodes vastly out of the intended order. I debated a long time on whether to buy it. I like space shows, for the most part, but the combination of one with a western made me cautious. But then it was from Joss Whedon; and I love Buffy and Angel. So, I eventually broke down and bought it. I'm really glad I did.

By the end of the first part of the openning two part episode, I was hooked. And I found myself after pretty nearly every episode thinking FOX was stupid for having mismanaged the show. It's a quirky show, but if one lets oneself be open to the story behind the quirky (provided they don't already love quirkiness), I think they'd find the story to be really good. There are nine main characters that are in pretty nearly every single episode, and none of them felt like they were shortchanged to me; they all have something in each episode that advances their character. There are a few episodes that aren't as great as the others, but comparing those few weaker episodes to much of what's on tv and it's still better than most shows. It's a vast shame that the show was cancelled because the setting up of the big story arc that the show would have unrolled as it went along was great. There are so many things that I would have loved to seen where they were going (which would have been gotten to had the show continued).

I'm definitely looking forward to the Firefly movie coming out next year and seeing any of the story set ups in the series are paid off.

In a word to describe the show: "Shiny!"

As you said, it's a steal price. Unless you had a problem with Buffy (like character writing and dialogue style, which this show somehow manages to transplant exactly), you should at least like it. At best, you'll love it, and we'll have another converted Browncoat on our hands.

The first ep pilot is rather kickass. I have to say the first few eps after it are the slowest in the set. Show gets much better in disc two. Show gets mighty kickass again in disc three and after. And while there's definitely stuff to resolve that the cancellation never left time for, the show never had time to build some required arc story - the eps are all related but stand-alone, and the last ep is actually a pretty good grace note. Commentaries are golden, Whedon give as much insight into his creation as he can, much like JMS, and he and the cast are regularly pretty funny. I've rewatched the set several times, and plan to do so again in the near future - it's definitely easier, with less eps and less arc, to do so.

Given time, I think this could've given B5 a run for it's money - and with the movie Serenity in the pipeline, it might yet. So grab.

I missed the show when it was on but heard so many good things about it that I bought the DVDs. I wasn't at all sorry. Don't know if it would have had the complexity of B5 but there were definitely elements being set up for down the road.

You cannot go wrong...it is very good.

Very possible that you will become as pissed with Fox for cancelling Firefly as with TNT for Crusade.

Loved the 'old west' in outer space theme as it makes sense that the human colonies would be low tech.

Another great universe.. would love to know the outcome of the series arcs.

Yes, great show, highly recommended. A lot of set-up for what was to come and unfortunately it leaves you hanging and in full mystery mode.

The good thing is, however, that the film in in production and is said to be full arc material! So, watching the series will definately give you a big edge when you see the film.

I agree with everyone that Firefly was a great show. I saw most of the episodes when they were aired and caught the rest (plus the bonus episodes) on the DVD release.

I'm also looking forward to Firefly movie "Serenity" that is currently being filmed. I attended the related talk by Joss Whedon at the San Diego Comic Con last month. He surpised the crowd by bringing the entire cast of the show with him. It was great. He showed about two minutes worth of clips from the movie and then spent the rest of the time taking Q&A. Each of the cast had time to talk and answer questions.

If anyone is interested, here is a picture from the session. Sorry for the low resolution, I wasn't too close to the stage. Joss is on the left and you can probably make out the rest of the cast.

I bought it about twenty minutes ago. It's a great time, as in my B5 viewing, I just finished Into the Fire. A little break is in order, I think.

I popped in disc one, but I didn't get through it as I had to leave for work 28:49 into the episode. I love it so far. The look is very...Star Warsian. Kind of confusing at the start with the battle.

And the dialogue is very fast, network-TV style. You really have to pay attention to get everything. Good way to keep your audience's attention. I have never watched Whedon stuff in the past, so it is new to me. But it is similar to stuff like ER scenes in the emergency room when three ambulances arrive at the same time.

I love the look, but really, isn't it kind of coincidental that the guns and clothes look "western?" Don't get me wrong, I love the clothes and guns. Also, the music was cool, but got old after fifteen minutes. Does it do this all throughout the series? The "geetar" strumming thing?

Well, that's the unique FIREFLY angle...it's literally a western in space. A wonderful blend of the two "frontier" genres. And yes, the music remains "western" in style.

Only kinda sorta coincidental - I mean you saw the Alliance bits by now, so obviously it's not everyone. But more so the further from the center of civilization they get. I imagine Mal just likes the coat.

You'll see more guns than just the handheld bits too. Mal's is a little more future styled when you get a closer look at it. Or at least it looks like no revolver I've seen.

Music will shuffle up a bit - if you've only heard the guitar so far, you haven't really been listening. A simple guitar strumming will usually cover simple shifts and cuts though.

                            Ah...Serenity

Joss did a great job with the concept for Firefly. Maybe the reason I like it is I am a natural rebel. I sided instantly with Mal and his crew and never looked back. The acting was good throughout, everyone giving solid performances, and, face it, with the exception of the pilot and the priest, everyone is very attractive, especially the "companion" (25th century for courtesan, I suppose).

I can't wait for books, another series, or the upcoming movie to help answer some of the questions I have. I won't spoil them for you, but, DAMN the show was good. Not quite as good as B5, but very good.

Speaking of Mal, he is a great lead. Not on Boxleitner level, but better than some other recent shows.

<<You'll see more guns than just the handheld bits too. Mal's is a little more future styled when you get a closer look at it. Or at least it looks like no revolver I've seen.>>

His looks more like a flint, to me.

What I meant, and this is responding to CE, too, is that is it so...constant? It got tiring after a while.
