  • While I think you should have placed higher based on the quality of your submission, I would like to congratulate you and tell you that I admire you for going after your dreams.

    • Thank you, Karen! Apparently though, it isn't over yet: I just learned today that Bookperk has hired a third party company to verify the results, so perhaps some number of people will be bounced for fraudulent voting. Quite a few people joined up in the last couple of days and quickly shot to over a thousand, which is suspect at best...

Sad to think there might have been fraud. If there was, though, I hope it puts you into the top 20!

Although the vote has ended, one can still post a thoughtful comment. I urge all of Amy's supporters to do so. Remember to emphasize Amy's talent, not to whine about her not making it into the top 20.

Amy, I plotted the historical data (tab separated) from http://loath.org/aneel/random/bookperk/latest.html

I only saw three entries in the top 20 that look suspicious: ihnatko, misterfizz, and NomudaJ.

Thanks go to aneel at loath dot org for providing the data.

Amy's fans have been very consistent in their voting. On average, 31.279 people voted per day.

            R-square = 0.9967

If you are interested I can post the graphs of the data.

            • Dan, I am VERY interested. I've heard that they have started adjusting the votes already; the top 20 apparently already looks very different (some people are using the links on loath.org ù which are frozen from the end of the contest ù to view the top scorers and watch their numbers change).

Again, thanks so much to ALL who supported me so tirelessly through this process!

                • Very interesting. People are also complaining about lost votes, people who got messages saying they had already voted that day when they hadn't, etc. etc. Makes me think they might have to allow more than 20 into round 2, just to bolster the appearance of fairness... I still probably won't make it in, but I'll be interested to see how they handle it all.

Amy, ALL of your votes were obtained honestly. You lost none of your votes when Harper Collins made their vote adjustments.

                      • Thanks, Dan, I did notice that. I'm kind of sad that Andy Ihnatko got to stay in the top 20. He's a columnist for a major newspaper (Chicago Sun-Times), and a very well known blogger (and he used to hang around Roger Ebert's Compuserve forum back in the day, making suggestions for his Movie Glossary ù I have to confess, those were fun days and I liked him back then!). Somehow, it doesn't seem in the spirit of the contest to have famous people get to compete against the rest of us mooks, but Andy disagrees in his blog!

                        • I'm kinda curious what the criteria was for keeping and eliminating the contestants. Why weren't all the people with fraudulent votes eliminated? Why were some with very few fraudulent votes eliminated, while those with a lot got to stay in the top 20? Hopefully if they do this again they'll be able to keep a better track of the legitimate votes and also have a statement in place that any fraud will result in forfeiting any prize.

                          • Karen, probably because people can't be responsible for all of the folks who are voting for them. Some crazy person could see your picture, decide you look like their first girlfriend, and want to throw you hundreds of fraudulent votes. That wouldn't be your fault. So, they threw out the fraudulent votes but kept the entrants ù who could very well have had nothing to do with the fraud.

From more paranoid and cynical perspective: if Harper Collins had the policy of throwing out entrants with a sizeable amount of fraudulent votes, throwing fraudulent votes in the direction of a competitor would be the surest way to disqualify that competitor.

Both valid points. I wish we lived in a world where people wouldn't think of cheating and played by the rules........
