Just wanted to mention this in case anyone gets a chance to see it - there's a new indie movie called Monsters that is absolutely, stunningly beautiful.

I don't want to spoil too much, and trust me when I say the trailers utterly misrepresent the movie. It's a quiet, thoughtful science fiction (not horror) road movie/love story with political undertones. It's fantastically well-done, and we (myself, my wife and a couple of friends) found it to be very powerful and moving.

Edited to add: it was made on a budget of 15.000$. That's less than 1/1000th of Cloverfield, and yet it looks better.

I also wrote a detailed review:

If you like B5, this is really one movie not to miss. Truly thoughtful science fiction.

Looks like there's a panel about it at NYCC in a couple of weeks.

Gareth Edwards, writer/director of the critically acclaimed Monsters, explains the process of making a film on a small budget and his use of visual effects. He breaks down some key scenes in the film and explains the effects he created step by step.

Well, as long as it's not just another "you're an evil racist if you don't support illegal immigration" movie, I guess it sounds good.

You might see it that way.

              That doesn't tell me much.

I like my immigration legal. The only one of the 7 ethnicities in my family tree that didn't have to submit to that was the one who was already here to begin with.

Now, if it has more to do with the plight of people displaced by war and beaten down by other stupidities, which it seems to, I can get behind that.

However, based on the reviews I've heard, it's on my short list.

Then again... I rather liked Cloverfield. And not for the monster. Which wasn't evil.
