Anyone watch this? I actually can't find a thread about it in the past year haha. I juuuust finished watching atlantis literally last night, which was a fairly disappointing series. I feel like they started to pick up a little more decently in the 5th season though than the prior.

So in a non-spoiler-as-possible-way...is universe any good? what's it about? i know the dvd just came out yesterday.

Here are my thoughts from this thread.

SGU is a brilliant idea in concept. It definitely has a "Stargate Pretending to be BSG" feeling, which is not a bad thing. However, it suffers from the same ailments of the other SG series: the episodes, while not self-contained, generally have generic plots with predictable solutions. When they try to be unpredictable, they're predictable. With all that being said, I will continue to watch.
It actually got really good the last few episodes before the hiatus. I hate that about Syfy; we don't need mid-season cliffhangers.

Beware, though: Almost everyone on the show is an asshole. Not just the people stranded on the ship, either.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

So you're saying it's like Stargate: Galactica?

        Stargate: Galactica -- Not bad.

I watched all the episodes in the first go round, and liked some of the stories, but as Dr. Maturin pointed out, none of the characters are really likeable, and I LIKE to like at least some of the characters in a show. I can take a lot of darkness, but give me someone to root for. I'm probably going to watch it when it returns, but I'm on the fence.

That was my problem with Galactica too, there wasn't a character I really identified with and really wanted to win. I'm in through the 4th episode of this now after last night and I have to say, it's really really interesting thus far and I'm enjoying it. I do agree that there's no character I've latched onto yet. Perhaps the paramedic woman or the geek guy? They might be okay in terms of a "good guy".

The main character Dr. Rush though is such a deep character despite his unlikability it's really fun to watch. Will watch more tonight and report back I see a lot of potential for this show and feel like it's going to be a first season of getting to know the characters and get comfortable with the ship and all that, and then it's going to explode in a cool direction.

I was about to say, Rush is awesome, but he isn't someone I'd like. Eli is nice enough, but he is unlikable because he leans too much on the emo side.

I will DEFINITELY be watching when it comes back. The real season finale is called "Incursion." Hmmm...

Personally, I like good sci-fi drama as much as the next guy. And I know exactly why most SG-1 and Atlantis fanbois hate SG:U. But I really tried to get into it and after 5 eps I decided that the show a massive failure.
But I wouldn't go as far as telling someone who is asking whether it's worth watching not to. Watch some eps and draw your own conclusions, I'd say...

Just got through it and I think the premise is pretty good, and it's pretty well done. There were a couple lame episodes in there and I feel like the back 5 episodes were not as good as the first 5 which really set an interesting tone for the series, but I have faith that it'll develop into something interesting.

I think I'll give it the full season to see where they're going with it.

What's everyone's favorite/ least favorite eps so far?

I think my favorite was probably Light - though it was obvious, it was a good science fiction concept. Dr. Rush was really developed and so was the whole relationships of all the crew.

Least favorite - Earth. It just seemed really shallow to me and everything I hear people complaining about SGU for.

This posting may be a bit pre-mature because I haven't had a chance to watch any of SGU yet, eventhough I've recorded a few episodes. On co-worker of mine said she really liked the pilot. While just an hour ago I got off the phone with another co-worker of mine and she said she hates SGU. She said it reminds her of the Big Brother reality show in space and she hates Big Brother. Is there any truth to this comparison?

I'd compare it more to battlestar galactica and lost. It looks like the first 10 eps are more to get to know the characters than anything else, and they say it's going to pick up a lot with the second half of the season. I've really enjoyed it personally.

What gets some people is there really hasn't been a full blown 'villan' in the show that they're for sure after, like cylons or shadows for instance. Not to say that some of the characters aren't villanous. I kind of like that because I was sick of the other two stargates having the "oh no...now there's a worrrse system lord than last season!" "oh no..now there's a worrrse wraith than last season!" which dragged on for a long time. Not to say I didn't enjoy SG-1, just became a little tired in the metaplot.

I kept hoping to like this series, and occasionally an episode would be good enough to get my hopes up, but I finally gave up part way through the second to last episode of the first "half-season". I'd never watched any of the other SG shows, so maybe that's part of the problem. But, like others have mentioned here, there's really no character to root for so far. And the really weak sex/love relationships plus the excruciating visits to earth for character back-story finally proved too much for me.

Maybe I should have gutted out that episode to watch the semi-finale, but I just couldn't take it any more.

1x11 was a pretty excellent episode. More action, more sci-fi stuffs, aliens, none of that Earth crap. Let's hope they keep it up.

I agree, it was a very good episode and interesting. At risk of a minor spoiler...
great to see not all aliens speaking fluent English right off the bat too!

I'm still watching. I haven't finished the most recent episode, yet. It will be interesting to see what they do with Dr. Rush after recent events. I wonder if they found they needed to make him more likeable and are using this as an excuse to do so.
