  • Shadow Box Ideas: Babylon 5 & Others

A couple of months ago my wife and I decided to put together a series of Shadow Boxes for our rec room. Each Shadow Box measures 24 x 30 inches by 1 3/4 inches deep.
Each Shadow Box will contain various items of memorabelia from a particular movie or television show. As you can guess one of these boxes will be of Babylon 5. It will have a Babylon 5 jacket and various insignias that I purchased off of E-Bay. The jacket nearly fills the entire box with just enough room for the emblems and patches.
A couple of the other Shadow boxes so far are:
Space: 1999, which I scooped up a couple of still sealed original release action figures from the series, patches, unopened trading cards, etc.
Raiders of the Lost Ark, which so far has the original theatre collector album booklet, replica of the Head piece of the Staff of Ra, un opened trading cards, un opened Beta copy of the movie, etc.
Crusade: We were going to do this one, but changed our minds when I was dramatically outbid in the final minutes of a small bidding war on a Crusade Cast and Crew Jacket.
There's room for a couple other Shadow Boxes but we haven't decided on which ones to do. I know I purchased a still sealed copy of Star Wars and other Galactic Funk album, but it's getting hard to find original still sealed items from the original film without going broke. So we might just put that album in a single album frame to put on the wall.
So I'm looking for other ideas and hopefully I've also sparked a few ideas for others.

As soon as each Shadow Box is 100% complete, I'll definitely take a photo and post it here. Some the items that I've ordered for each Box hasn't come in yet. I'm trying to be patient because I'm really looking forward to seeing them finished and on the wall.

A friend of mine reminded me that I forgot to post pictures of these shadow boxes. Well here they are, but my appologies on some of them having other items in the room reflecting off of them:

I'll be moving the Lord of the Rings map to the opposite wall to make room for another Shadow Box. This one will be of Crusade because I just purchased a Cast And Crew Jacket of Crusade which came in the mail yesterday. This will be displayed in the same manner as the Babylon 5 jacket. Because there's limited Crusade memorabilia, I decided to put three of the Crusade VCD's that I have in the bottom of the Shadow Box in the same manner that I have the badges and patches of B5 below the B5 jacket. I have decided to have the last VCD in the Shadow Box which has Richard Biggs on the cover. But, I can't decide on the other two. I welcome some ideas to help in my decision. Below is a photo of the Jacket and the VCD'S for viewing.

Heinlein is always a good choice
or more modern authors David Weber, Anne McCaffrey, etc

if you go heinlein it isn't too hard to get something thats been signed, maybe move posters or other materials from one of the various adaptions

also Doctor Who is a good choice, many decades to pick from

Wow, those are *great*! Thanks for sharing.

As for which two other VCDs to put in, my choice would be Vol. 1.01 With the Drakh and 1.02 with Galen.

Please let us see the competed project. I think it'll complement the B5 jacket nicely.

I have been wanting to make a Hornblower/Aubrey-Maturin shadow box from some time.

                Good job.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

How do you get the patches to stay in place?

I've been building a collection of patches from every U.S. manned space mission, from Mercury onwards to the Shuttle flights, and when the Shuttle is retired, a Shadow Box like this is EXACTLY what I want to make, but I could never figure out a way to keep the patches from sliding around without pinning or otherwise damaging them.

Very nice. I like your mini Staff of Ra headpiece, and I used to have that Space:1999 comic book way back when.

Shadow boxes are usually necessitated by objects with a lot of depth, so if they're only patches, you could just go with a flat picture frame over a black felt background. Just set 'em and forget 'em.
If you do want a shadow box, you could go with some two-sided tape, depending on how you feel about taping the backs of your patches. You could also go to your local craft store and find out if they have any new inventions to complete your project the way you want it.

The patches in the Space: 1999 and B5 shadow Box are held in place with double sided tape.
Both the patches and the badges in the B5 shadow box are stuck on a piece of styrofoam that is covered with black cloth. The covered styrofoam is held to the back of the shadow box with double sided tape, the patches are held to the covered foam with double sided tape and the badges are simple stuck into the covered styrofoam because each badge as the long pin on the back.
My wife is heavy into crafts for years and she's the one who came up the solution.
Once we complete the Crusade Shadow Box, I'll post it here. But that won't be until around mid March because we have my daughters birthday in the first week and my wife doesn't want us to re-arrange these shadow boxes and frames before then.
I was finally successful in getting three of the original 12, still sealed action figures from the first Star Wars film off of E-Bay at reasonable prices and want do a Star Wars (A New Hope) Shadow Box now, but I'm having a challenge in convincing my wife.
