At the time of the 1800 election, president and vice-president were still chosen merely by total number of votes, and the House had to decide who was president since there was a tie between them at 73 each. The house voted 10-4 for Jefferson.
    I'm thinking more of the deals that Hamilton did so that Adams didn't remain president. He made sure that the high-federalists didn't vote for him. IIRC he was third in the electoral voting by the House. But you make a good point.
