Providing you sell 1 copy you can always make a profit. You just have to charge a sufficiently high price. It sounds like the entire book trade has got the pricing of small selling books wrong.
The supermarkets can get away with only selling best sellers products, people accept that they go to a specialist shop for the rest. Specialist shops, like book shops, cannot use this strategy.Andrew Swallow

I'll file this away with the story that ran in the UK a year or two ago about how one of the major chain book stores (I think it was Waterstones) charged publishers on a sliding scale for promoting their latest releases as an employee's choice, book or the month or what have you. Basically all a publisher had to do in order to give their book the appearance of being hugely popular was to write a big fat check. Having written half a dozen books now, for different publishers of varying size, I'm not sure that there's anything about the publishing trade that would surprise me anymore.
