  • George Lucas on Indy 4, SW, Spiderman

Celebrity stalking trash for the most part from http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,270874,00.html but there was a George Lucas interview. Below:

But of course, we were most interested in talking with George Lucas, the affable genius film director who occasionally graces us in New York with an appearance. Lucas is absolutely one of my favorite people, a lovely guy who seems unaffected by his enormous success.

Lucas is currently preparing "Indiana Jones 4" with Harrison Ford, Blanchett and Shia LaBoeuf. The latter plays Ford's son, which means his mother was possibly the character Karen Allen played in "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

"I can't say," Lucas said when I brought up Allen.

Lucas says that Sean Connery still hasn't signed on, but his character, Indy's dad, is in the script. Other than that, his lips are sealed.

"Steven thinks we can keep the whole thing a secret," Lucas told me. "I explained to him that it's impossible nowadays. We can't live like that."

So then, tell me more about "Indy 4," I suggested.

"Oh no," replied Lucas with a smile.

Lucas told me he has seen all the summer movies since his company, Industrial Light and Magic, does most of the special effects. The only one they didn't work on was "Spider-Man 3." What did he think of it?

"It's silly. It's a silly movie," he said. "There just isn't much there. Once you take it all apart, there's not much story, is there?"

    Well, it's not "Star Wars."

"People thought 'Star Wars' was silly, too," he added, with a wink. "But it wasn't."

Lucas, by the way, says he is readying "Clone Wars," an animated series for TV that's derived from "Star Wars." Many "Star Wars" characters appear in "Clone Wars," but voiced by other actors.

And here's a little news: Lucas tells me he will make two more live-action films based in the "Star Wars" era.

"But they won't have members of the Skywalker family as characters," he said. "They will be other people of that milieu."

The two extra films will also be made for TV and probably be an hour long each. But, like "Clone Wars," Lucas doesn't know where on TV they will land.

Hello, HBO and Showtime. It may be time to pony up.

    -------------

That's right..from the man who brought you such hits as "Jar Jar Binks" and "An Ewok Adventure"...Spiderman 3 has no story and is "silly"! I think he's just upset that ILM didn't win the contract.

Indy 4...I'm very very scared about. *eyes skeptically*

As I am for "made for TV Star Wars movies". I thought he was going to do a live action TV series? What happened to that?

    Thoughts?

That coming from the person who wrote and directed the Star Wars prequel? I would that that it's the pot calling the kettle black.

Right now I donÆt have much faith in what George Lucas says or doesà Unfortunately Star Wars and Indiana Jones are ideas that have gotten away from him. He waited too long to fool around with the story and others have done far more with much less to get the same story acrossà i.e. Tomb Raider and a whole lot of TFN Fan movies that if watched with an open mind are great additions to the moviesà

As I posted in 11-21-2005 Thread Star Wars DVD

      [reason for my disappointments]

Now if his new two movie ideas are in the rated "R" range showing a level of evil that the sith are know for, and the good of the Jedi fighting them (as what the fans were expecting in the first three movies), then maybe I will support and defend George Lucas as a genius, but untill then he is just another rich Director/writer who's stories have gotten away from him again.

I'm stunned by the hubris of this man.

Cut the attitude, George. Maybe you came up with ideas for the beginning of your universe, but it was literally DOZENS of other talented souls who made it something compelling.

Episode 1 only left me with a glimmer of hope that Episode 2 would be better.

The first 30 minutes of Episode 2 showed me that I was wrong. Then I walked out.

But, the first Lego Star Wars videogame actually makes the prequel movies enjoyable.

I think the writer of the original article that SmileOfTheShadow was quoting got it slightly wrong. Lucas was probably referring to the the two live action television series currently in development, in addition to the animated series.

Ep3 was clearly the best of the prequel trilogy, and I think I would put it slightly above Ep6 in the whole scheme of things ... Ep6 being easily my least favourite of the OT, the only bright spot being Leia as slave and (even better) as Ewok hippy ... I just love that long hair!

It is also true that the original Lego SW video game added a fun dimension to the trilogy that the movies just didn't have.

Ep3 was only not that bad in consideration that it was the climax of a movie that should have been 90 minutes rather than several sequels long.

I would have liked it better if the last two movies - plus the first half of the third - hadn't made me wish Anakin would just get it over with and suicide already. Or if it'd really been C3PO masquerading as Anakin, which would have explained the acting skills. Or if R2D2 had wrote the damn thing, in his own language, thereby giving any emotional impact at all.

I have to admit, once things settle into the lava planet and that whole extended fight scene - nicely cool. But to watch two and a half train-wrecked movies to get to that point... I have better things to do.

EDIT - Oh, to be relevant I guess... Lucas can comment all he wants - but he has the credibility of Uwe Boll in the "fine cinema" category at this point. Let's pray to god Spielberg and Ford keep him as much to the sidelines as they can for Indy 4, and it might be something to look forward to. As far Yet Another Star Wars project... other than the animated Clone Wars, nothing has come of any of it. Not to mention I'm sick and tired of Star Wars as much as I am of Trek. Let it rest. Unless Lucas signs away the entire rights, and lets say, one of the better action writers of TV-dom (whoever was responsible for Alias and 24 before they turned to crap) takes a stab at the Knights of the Old Republic era.... that's how much of a distance leap they'd have to run to get me interested again.

I think there's a lot of people who can't really appreciate Episode 3 because they're still watching the original trilogy with the eyes of childhood nostalgia...
