  • Star Trek XI: Official

JJ Abrams has officially proclaimed the new Star Trek, and has now come out and said what we've known for months that it will star Captain Kirk and Co. They're going to keep the exterior of the ship the same but make some "modifications" to the interior design. People are speculating that they're going to go for a more realistic approach like the had on Enterprise for the bridge.

I guess they're (hollywood) finding out that sci-fi movies are the only things that actually make money these days heh. Unfortunately..i don't think they understand what sci-fi is all about and I fear they're going to further destroy things like Star Trek..perhaps Enders Game. A lot of breath holding for these movies.

I still say Thomas Jane for Kirk.

That last link made me think..have you guys all see the movie Free Enterprise? It's about a couple of dorky sci-fi guys who are about to turn 30 and kinda figuring out what life is about. It stars William Shatner..as himself, and is one of the funniest comedies I've ever seen (mostly because of all the crazy sci-fi references in it). I'd definitely suggest picking up the dvd of it if you haven't.

In a way I don’t know how to respond to an announcement like this… If another person plays a character William Shatner made famous for so many years then this announcement is moot to me and wont allow me to get excited about any future endeavors.

William Shatner and co. are the real reason why Star Trek has played so well, replace the actors with copies mimicking them and what you have is a spoof of the original series. Redo all the scripts with a modern flair to them and certain points wont get across or better yet lead to an unintended alternate conclusion. Not to mention the lost of the camp factor.

Why redo/reimage Star Trek- Kirk/Spock? Would they do the same if it was Cary Grant, William Holden, forbid John Wayne (these were actors in movies, not movies with actors).

As I said nothing to get excited about…

I gotta disagree myself. After 4 or 5 incarnations of Star Trek it is only the thought of a faithful return to vintage Trek that has me excited. Like it or not, the characters of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Scotty are ingrained in the public consciousness. People who never bothered to watch old Star Trek for any number of reasons can be persuaded to discover the franchise through a new, state of the art re-working of the original premise. And while I do not wish for characters to imitate the old actors, a passing resemblance or familiarity can't hurt. Gary Sinise is a fan favorite for McCoy, not to imitate Kelley, but to be Gary Sinise. Similarly, Jane is taller and leaner than Shatner ever was, but I believe he ca pull off the character's attributes.

I'd much rather see a new movie taking place in old school-Trek era with new actors, then another movie with TNG cast, or really any of the other spin-offs, which I have never cared for as much as the original.

It's been long enough that I think a recasting is fine, and you know, it does work. It has been done before (i.e. James Bond). As long as they take care to find people who can really pull off these well established characters, I'll be happy.

Better to get back to the roots of the show, and if that means new actors... so be it.

I remember around when Voyager was coming out, they were toying with the idea of a "Sulu Adventures" on the excelsior or something of the like. It's a little late to do that now, but I think that would have been awesome.

Sulu would have sucked as badly (or better, ZING~!) as Voyager did. They need a new formula.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

I was just at starfest in denver this weekend, and they were already giving away teaser posters for the movie. All it says is startrek 2008 and has the original uniform patch on it. Nimoy, guest there, also mentioned the news.... as well as there may be some truth to the fact that he has authority over picking who would reprise his role as spock.

That poster is almost a year old.

                            Terrible idea.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Just wait a few years, then come back and give us something completely different and ORIGINAL. No retreads, no "re-imaginings", none of that crap. A fresh, original take on Trek.
