    New 2008 Star Trek Movie -- A Re-Boot

Much of this thread has been about the similarities between B5 and DS9 that support the really plausible theory that Trek stole from JMS.

Well, the new buzz about the 2008 Star Trek movie is that it is considered a re-boot of the franchise.

Funny how not too long ago JMS & Bryce Zabel wrote a series bible/treatment for a re-boot of Star Trek in TV form. Paramount passed on the idea, but now, there just happens to be a re-boot of Trek in movie form.

Maybe Paramount didn't even read the treatment, and therefore, the basic concept of a re-boot might be more of a Battlestar Galactica rip off. But, it will be interesting to see how much of the movie resembles the way JMS & Zabel envisioned a new Star Trek.

This has the potential to be the 2nd time Paramount has screwed JMS over.

Oh, and part of the rumor I read was that the movie will simply be titled Star Trek. No sequel number; no subtitle.

From what I've heard, no resemblance at all. As I recall, JMS said at a convention that Paramount had never agreed to look at their treatment at all. As he said in his post about it, there were 'political considerations'.

JMS & Bryce Zabel's treatment re-imagined Trek in a similar manner to the way BSG has done, basically starting over from where TOS began and concentrating on the Kirk/Spock/McCoy et al dynamic.

Everything I've heard about the new movie says that it's supposed to center around Kirk & Spock (not sure about McCoy) meeting while in Starfleet Academy.

Sounds like something I wouldn't want to see.

Any "reboot" for Trek shouldn't be about Kirk or Spock or McCoy, etc.

Start over with an ENTIRELY different crew, new mission, etc. If you want things really different, do something crazy like set it even further in the future, like how TNG (and subsequently DS9 and VG) was(/were) a few decades after the original Trek.

i agree. with the massive tech change in the real world jumping to say 3200 or so (yes a millenina form the original) could be very interesting. TOTALLY new ship designs, new areas to explore. hell the best would bo to explore the void between

Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.
