  • Vatta's War

i just managed to aquire an arc (advanced readers copy, or review copy) of Elizabeth Moon's forthcoming Command Decision (4th of the Vatta's War books) i'm about a 3rd thru and i am most impressed again. She just keeps comign out with amazing military Scifi. the chars are well developed, the story is complex and realistic, and most of all the science is HARD ok ansibles and ftl but almost every scifi author and reader must suspend there. all the other science is legit. And she has such a great sense of irony and drama. Completely blows Webers Honor Harrington out of the water

anyway i felt like sharing as i am really enjoying this book (not to mention the other 3)

while the first one did get poor reviews when you look at them what you see is that the book did not have as much action as the reveiwers wanted, its actully quite a solid base for a story

    Anyother Elizabeth Moon fans here?

I read the pak's quest story, all 4 books (eventually having to fly to the states to get book 4 in borders aws I couldn't get a copy over here).
I thought they were good. I've not read the vatta's war stuff and I've got waaaay to much stuff to read atm to get into another series.
So yes, I do like the elizabeth moon stuff.

"There are no good wars. War is always the worst possible way to resolve differences. It degenerates and corrupts both sides to ever more sordid levels of existence, in their need to gain an advantage over the enemy. Those actively involved in combat are almost always damaged goods for the rest of their lives. If their bodies don't bear scars, their minds do, ofttimes both. Many have said it before, but it can't be said to enough, war is hell. "

i highly recomend them, also her Family Regent books are very good, she creates very engaging worlds and chars. plus since she was a marine in the US corp her military scifi is extermly realistic

oh the familia regent books are broken up into 2 sets of stories. first is Heris Serano (hunting party, winning colors, and sporting chance) and the Esmay Suzia books(change in command, once a hero, agienst the odds, and rules of engagment)

Speaking of military sci-fi, can anybody comment on the Honor Harrington books by David Weber?
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

certainly, i have only gotten thru 5 of them but thats more then enough to comment on.

they are military books written by a man about a woman hero. the science is pretty good, the concepts are good(wall of battle, lazerhead) but.......

for the first 2 to 3 books its like he was learning to write, the story is a bit clunky, the wording is nything but elegent, the chars are not fully alive

they are enjoyable books but they are not hugo material

Most of the books I read won't win awards.

I was thinking about starting out with The Shadow of Saganami, where apparently things start fresh.

I began this book last week. I LOVE the characters so far. They seem like real people. A lot of times, science fiction churns out a lot of boring characters, which I like to call "wooden robots."

funny i litterally just finished shadow of saganami, and it was very good, some bits were quite slow, but the politics are interesting and very human

overall (including the honor harrington mainline books) it seems to me like weber is moving the series along to an eventual war with the solarian league, the forshadowing is mainly in the crown of slaves and shadow of saganami
(both of which are suposed to have sequals titles unknown sometime towards the end of this year) and since weber has said he as 5 more main harrington books in mind and about 5 offshoots with at all costs i can't see the war(s) with the republic of haven going more then maybe 1 or 2 more books

with the star kingdom's expansion it is as far as i can figure now about the size of the prewar republuc of haven (maybe a bit larger) with strong allies (grayson and the andermani) and with the political unrest seen in the solarian league(crown of slaves) i keep coming up with it has to be an eventual war with the solarian league, probably with the republic of haven joining on manticore's side.

than again this should be in a dedicated thread about honor harrington and surrounding universe shouldn't it
