  • BSG Season 3 Ratings

In case you haven't read my threads discussing such, there's a problem with BSG's ratings now, which, us stargate fans are attributing to the split up of "Sci-fi" fridays. This trend could be a problem, especially with the amount of marketing money they put into BSG:

    Opener: 1.8 rating
    Exodus Part I: 1.6
    Exodus Part II: 1.4

And that's where we stand. Huge decline from week to week. What do you guys think? I love this show, I really do. And I think everyone rates it as really good. Strange.

I like it a lot but damn, it needs something every once in a while to lighten it up. JMS knew that taking us from a light place to a dark made the transition more effective but BSG just goes from dark to pitch black.

I'll certainly keep watching but I'm not a Neilsen family and those are the ones who count. The only other thing to do is to write to Sci-Fi and let them know that you watch and include demographic info so that they know what their target audience is.

You know what..you're so dead on right with why I get uneasy with the show from time to time. I didn't watch exodus til last night, including part I which I dled on i-tunes because I just wasn't in the mood for something that dark the past couple of weeks. The only lighter episode was "Pegasus" which was arguably the best ep of the show.

Why can't I be a Neilsen family! Darrrrnit.

Anyway...my little savestargatesg1.com community is having everyone write letters saying the ratings are down because stargate and bsg are not blocked, and people like to watch both the shows at the same time who wouldn't watch them alone. I dunno if anyone cares to join in with that, seeing as everyone here doesn't seem to be so excited about stargate.

But SG1 is definitely light, back to the topic..which is the yin to the BSG yang.

Well, you can count me among the folks who have stopped watching BSG this season (after the first three or four episodes) and I never watched SG. BSG has gotten too dreary and repetitive for me. There is very little discovery of anything new and the characters are just not enthralling enough for me to come back to them week after week. So, from my point of view, the drop in ratings is due to the show getting weaker from season to season.

I agree that the second season left something to be desired, but I think this season has been great. Sure, it's a dark show, but I think that it's nice to see something different on television once in awhile. And how about rescuing all of the humans from New Caprica? That wasn't hopeful and positive enough for some of you? :-p

But..so many more people have died since then. It's like they just reset the show with even less humans than there were before. And now they're all turned against each other too. I think it's quite dark.

Didn't somebody say that quite a number of people actually got left behind on New Caprica? I thought that was mentioned during one of the trials.

I'm still watching. I might wish for some lighter moments like when Laura Roslin got the giggles before a speach, but I'm not anywhere near quitting.

I can only hope that B5 Lost Tales will include this kind of darkness in some episodes at least. BSG 3rd season rocks ! Awesome series.

And Jan... Yes it was mentioned during the trials. If i remember correcly

Wouldn't do much good for me to be selected as a Nielsen family unless I lied. We watch everything off DVR which, last I knew, they let you indicate but it didn't count very heavily since the people who watch recorded shows generally don't watch ads.

i REALLY like the direction the show is going, yes there could be some lighter elements but remeber that we are talking about the survivers of a near TOTAL apocalipse in the extremly biblical sense, maybe the religosity is being a little overplayed but its the world we live in and is great satire

how did the last ep do in the ratings?

Interestingly from the bit of research and reading that I've done, the word "apocalypse" etymologically means "vision", not "end of the world".

Hence ... Apocalypse Box ... presumably.

But because the most famous "apocalypse" known to western society is the vision of the end of the world attributed to John, that has become the primary meaning of the word. Just as the word "bible" derives from a Latin word that simply means "book", but in English it means one particular book. (Or rather, one of severval versions of a book, since all Bibles contain some books like Genesis, Exodus and certain other books of what Christians call The Old Testament, and all Christian Bibles include the 4 Gospels, but different sects and denominations disagree about the balance of the canon.)

For that matter Armageddon doesn't mean the end of the world, either. It is a variation of a place name, a hill overlooking a strategic pass in what is now northern Israel. According to the Book of Revelation (or "The Revelation [Vision] of John" to give yet another alternate title) this is where the final Earthly battle will take place.

Now here's where it gets a little creepy. The first battle in recorded history, the first clash between groups of men who formed recognizable armies, outfitted, trained and led uniformly, was fought between the Egyptians and Assyrians in 1478 B.C.E. It was fought for a city called Megiddo, built on a hill that commanded a major trade route. The other name for Megiddo is Armageddon.

Suggests a certain symmetry, does it not?

                          Regards,
