Star Trek Fan Fiction Shows

I've had my eye on these for awhile, but never paid too much attention to them, but now it appears like they're getting the ball rollling in the trek universe in a major way. There's www.newvoyages.com which recast the original group to do their "2nd five year mission." Walter Koenig even guest stared in their lates.

Then there's www.hiddenfrontier.org which is set after the dominion war on a new ship. Haven't heard as much about that.

And on a third front, with Walter Koenig and a big assortment of trek actors are doing this that's coming out "for the 40th anniversary" which is directed by Tim Russ (Tuvok).

Does anyone watch these or pay attention to them? I'm wondering how good they are and if I should invest time into watching them.

New Voyages is pretty good, even though their James Kirk is an Elvis impersonator from upstate New York (his Elvis income drives the production).
Their first episode, "Come What May", was a pretty good mish-mash of Star Trek cliches and definitely showed that they had most of the bugs worked out in their production process. Their second episode, "In Harms Way" is a time-travel heavy story with a similar feel to "All Good Things...", only with the Doomsday Machine, the Guardian of Forever, Captain Pike, ADMIRAL Kirk, and an old fat Captain Decker, reprised by William Windom (I thought he was dead). Definitely worth a look. New Voyages has gotten most of the press these days due to all the Trek alumni heading upstate in the past year. The next episode to be posted online soon, "To Serve All of My Days", stars Walter Koenig, and the next episode "World Enough and Time" stars George Takei. This one just finished principal photography last week. When it will be "finished" is anybody's answer.

But the publicity topper on this front is probably "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men", a film being directed by Tim Russ, with stars including Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nicholls, Alan Ruck, Tim Russ, Garrett Wang, Grace Lee Whitney, and several other "surprise" appearances. This one has an ambitious production schedule and promises to start delivering installments by Christmas. The production is in partnership with New Voyages to utilize their sets, props, and studio (an abandoned car dealership ).

Also is partnership with New Voyages is Starship Farragut, another TOS era fan series featuring the voyages of Captain John Carter (of Mars, I presume?) These two series are set to have crossover appearances with Carter and Kirk's crews. Only two trailers exist at this time. www.starshipfarragut.com

"Hidden Frontier" may well be good. Their ship effects are top notch, but all of their acting is done in front of green screen and looks, well.... cheesy. But that's how they're able to crank them out so fast. The series is in its 7th Season.

But my favorite right now is "Starship Exeter" (www.starshipexeter.com) which follows the recomissioned Starship Exter (last seen in TOS's "The Savage Curtain") and its crew, headed by Captain John Quincy Garovick. Unlike all the other shows, this one hails (no pun) from Texas. They have two webisodes online, unfortunately, the first one "The Savage Empire" is pretty poor and the vastly superior "The Tressaurian Intersection" is only half complete and running a year behind schedule. But just the teaser act of this one show a real level of sophistication that makes it very watchable. I even like the Andorian Lt B'Fuselek, played by Joshua Caleb, with a goofy Marvin the Martian voice.

If you find the viewing options limited, you can always go to www.youtube.com and search for these films. The site is easy to use, download speed is high and they can be viewed in full screen.

Between the new enhanced TOS, the fan film phenomenon, and J.J. Abrams' future Trek, it is a damn exciting time for us old school Trekkies.

On a funny note, Ralph Miller created two short clips on YouTube that poke fun of the delays. In one, Balok (the angry puppet, not the Tranya kid) of the Fesarius informs Kirk (James Cawley) that he has 4 Earth time periods known as months to post "To Serve All of My Days", and in the other, the Melkotian (Spectre of the Gun) warns Captain Garovick that he will complete Act 3 of "The Tressaurian Intersection" immediately or suffer the consequences.
