  • Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip

Anybody else catch this last night? I had actually watched it online over the weekend and though I was pretty busy last night, still cleared an hour of my schedule to watch it again.

I enjoyed the Judd Hirsch's character's onair meltdown and its nice to see that Sorkin acknowledges that it's an obvious Network riff.

    Some random thoughts-

    * Best line- "I already have a dual masterbation show in active development."
    * I really liked the Production Assistant character, especially her "Are you here to save us?" I hope we see more of her to get sort of the "ground level" view of what is going on.
    * Steven Weber- The nice goofy guy from WINGS is GONE! And that's great.
*I don't think we've seen the last of Judd Hirsch. You don't hire an actor like him for such a small, though important, role.
    * Could this please be set in the same universe as Sports Night? How great would it be for one of the SN anchors to show up as a "Studio 60" guest host? Perhaps Sabrina Lloyd could show up for a couple of weeks as a producer before deciding she likes working sports news better? As a friend of mine at work said this morning "A unified Sorkin Universe would make me explode with glee."
    * One big question I hope gets addressed. If Matt wrote "Crazy Christians" four years ago, how did it find itself in the lineup for that night's show? Was it submitted by one of the show's current writers under their own name after being found in an old file? Did the Judd Hirsch character slip it in?

I do like this show a lot. Tonight's ep almost clinched it for regular viewing. Probably another will do it. I went in expecting a comedy, but I'll take a drama/comedy this good (note: Sorkin noob here, other than a brief Sports Night stint - which I didn't even know was his - I know he has his fanclub, I'm just not on the wagon yet - and speaking of SN, lets hope this does better, yes? *end ramble*).

As for the skit in question, scan the new female prez's lines again (character names are always spotty for me at first). She never says it outright. But she hands the script to Matthew Perry knowing exactly what it is, who it's from and when, and says as much. Funny how she was so informed on a skit that never made air.

I finally got around to watching it and I was, to be generous, underwhelmed. I'm hardly sold on Sorkin as a great writer and the show just seemed to be him preaching. It wasn't exactly hilarious.

Judging by the ratings, quite a few people seem underwhelmed by it.

Tina Fey's show shocked me by being funny.

Since, you know, she usually isn't.

Preaching? *scratches head* I suppose. Honestly not why I watch it.

And yeah, ratings aren't in the tank but they're close, and they're very very last place. It'll be lucky to last more than a season at this rate.

It's clearly not why a lot of people watch it. It's ratings are in the tank for a reason.

I haven't seen the show, but it IS Aaron Sorkin, so I'm assuming some amount of preaching is present.

I like the show, but I have always liked his other shows, Sports Night and the early years of The West Wing.

Studio 60 was just picked up for the back 9 episodes, so it will run a complete season.

A couple of my friends hail this as the best show currently on tv, but I've yet to watch it. Just doesn't seem like a concept I'd enjoy. And I know I'd get beaten over the head with politics, which I don't like to see in TV. However, with networks policy regarding lame game shows and bad reality tv...I really want to watch any good show I can cling to.

Well, it's available on XBox Live Arcade now (full episodes of the season to date) --- so it can now bomb in multiple formats.

The Arcade, mind you, is now even more awesome. South Park, tons of Adult Swim, movies, etc are now downloadable. Nifty!

reviving this thread as i just borrowed the DVDs (which are surprisingly exprensive) off a mate and sat down to watch it.

I love it, i've seen two episodes and had to force myself to stop because i am up for work in the morning and it was almost 22::00.

I would rather avoid spoilers so I'll post my thoughts here as I go through it.

yes it is a little politically preachy but I love sorkin so I dont mind
"There are no good wars. War is always the worst possible way to resolve differences. It degenerates and corrupts both sides to ever more sordid levels of existence, in their need to gain an advantage over the enemy. Those actively involved in combat are almost always damaged goods for the rest of their lives. If their bodies don't bear scars, their minds do, ofttimes both. Many have said it before, but it can't be said to enough, war is hell. "

So I was watching "Nevada day part two" and the owner of the network turns to Jordan and says "A lie can get halfway around the world before the truth gets it's shoes on".

Nice to see a pratchett quote in the show, even if unattributed and slightly modified
