  • My Final Worldcon Update: Battlestar Galactica

I went to the Battlestar Galactica panel yesterday and found out a little bit of information that may or may not be interesting or new. Minor Spoilers ahead, possibly

Okay, well Battlestar Season 3 is about to happen, and it's going to be about the cylon occupation of new caprica, fighting back, traitors, the such. Ronald Moore says they'll continue bluring the lines between who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. I'm rooting for the cylons. He says in this season "people are going to die." And also that we will see the inside of a cylon baseship, which will be boarded, in turn learning more about the culture and how it operates. There was a brief trailer for season 3 which didn't give much away, and the last line showing Adama saying "I'm going back."

Other than that, they talked about webepisodes which will be consisting of ten 2-3 minute shows that help build the season premire. Sounds pretty cool for me, and they'll be free online. They're also putting together a clips ep of the first 2 season which will be downloadable for free to catch up new people who may want to start but don't want to watch the whole thing.

Caprica was also mentioned, which the final draft is being pitched to the network right now. It's a spinoff that takes place 50 years prior, and will be about the origin of the cylons and such. Sounds pretty cool to me.

Annnd...that's about all, I think. I asked the writers about how much of their stories get edited, and they don't seem to have the JMS mentality of "miiiine! don't touch!" They said there was a lot of editing that went on to make the series as tight as it was, and they're generally happy about their notes from the network, and oblige them. It's a spin I'm not used to hearing while browsing these boards, that's for sure.

There seems to be a fairly large writing staff over there which may make a difference. I think staff writers have to assume they'll be rewritten. When I went to the showrunner panel, they seemed to agree that if you have a good liason between studio and network, you've got a good thing going. Get a bad one and you're in trouble.

Yup, they kept repeating "it's part of the process."

Bear in mind that the JMS/B5 paradigm was very much an exception. On Buffy, every script had Joss Whedon's fingerprints on it. On Doctor Who, it's Russell T. Davies who puts his final stamp on it. A good staff writer knows it's part of the process, which is why so many of them eventually end up running their own shows.
