Cult hits do not always equal hits on the networks.

Really? The New BSG was 'flying around on a ship' for the first two seasons and probably will be again. It's a means of moving the cast to the story. Otherwise all you'd have is people stuck in a tin can sniping at each other.
But BSG has the great arc. One "searching for something in space" arc show is enough. And BSG is BSG. It showed up three years ago for the first time in two decades. Apples and olives, as it were.

Star Trek needs something new. Cut and dry.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

Here's a link to some of the sites I mentioned: New York Times June 18

Apparently what you think Trek needs and what the fans want don't necessarily coincide.

It's all a moot point, though, as far as the JMS/Zabel treatment is concerned. Remember, Paramount refused to even see it for 'political reasons'.

I see what is probably 0.01% of Star Trek fandom making their own fan films and some pictures with people in bad makeup.

Plus, you don't want just the old fans; you have to create new fans, or win back ones that left. Believe me, the stuff in that link would be laughed off of TV by the majority.

Please tell me that they meant "interstudio public relations" problems...

Read for yourself. I don't mean any kind of 'public relations' problems, I mean studio politics. Surely you weren't thinking any other sort, were you?

I was thinking of the slight possibility that they didn't like the politics of the pitch.

I don't follow you. The pitch was careful to not say anything negative about the then-current caretakers.

You really think that the fact that one of those sites claims 30 million downloads doesn't indicate that there's a worldwide fan demand for new Trek with the original characters? Wow. I wonder what it would take to impress you.

With the exception of the last season of Enterprise, I have long been bored with all things Trek. But this take excites me enough in just its audacity that I'd like to see done. pity that those in charge of successful things seldom like to take risks with that thing, eben though there is a desparate need to take those risks.

"A season finale which drops a huge clue into play, and forces the Enterprise to take a stand putting its very existance on the line."

Hmmmm... me thinks JMS still has some Crusade story demons to exorcise.

                      Zabel/Straczynski Trek Reboot

Bryce Zabel has posted the pitch document he and Straczynski put together in 2004 to present to Paramount for a Trek reboot. Details at:

I'm with ZHD here. They tried the same formula with Enterprise, and it failed. The format's tired.

Enough with Trek for now. Let the franchise die for a few years. Come back a few years - and I mean, like at least 5 to 10 - later and start things new with a FRESH premise.

It is a pity that Doctor Who did badly in the USA. Science Fiction being fashionable would be good for both Babylon 5 and Star Treck.

Too late. Apparently J.J. Abrams has been tapped to pen the next movie.

I hadn't heard that it did badly. But there's other SF that's doing pretty well-BSG for example, Both Stagates. And a lot of people are claiming Lost as being genre.

I would have prefered to see the JMS/Zabel series as opposed to seeing what Abrams supposedly has in store with the Starfleet Acadmey premise.

They're killing their franchise by trying to milk as much out of it as they can. No one cares except the diehards, and they proved with Enterprise that the diehards alone can't keep a show afloat.

Better to let it die for a few years, come back with something fresh, and make it interesting enough to gather a whole new generation of fans. It worked for TNG. I had only seen a handful of original Trek episodes when I was a kid, but I loved TNG when it debuted and watched it every season it was on.
