However, since both sides are in the 'room', tell me this: What can be done to *stop* the adversarial mindset and get the two sides working toward compromise on issues? Granted, there might be something to say for keeping any and all action neutralized, but is it even possible or is it just going to stay fasionable to bash each other and accomplish nothing?

    No.

    And here's why.

This is sort of an inside reference that only myself, Mike and LIM will get, but in the last day the three of us have been engaged in a heated discussion with two left-leaning individuals who think we're fools for not believing that George Bush intentionally caused 9/11, in order to appease, alternatively, the "corporations", or the military industrial complex neocon hawks, or (everyone's favorite punching bags) the Jews.

And another guy there, who I thought was something of a more moderate (if firmly liberal) person, only thinks Bush didn't cause it because he's too stupid to carry it off. Not because Bush is just nowhere near that evil and sociopathic an individual, just that he's too much of an idiot to accomplish such a feat.

When the well is THAT poisoned - that a disturbing number of people on one side of the political aisle are so full of irrational hatred that they're willing and EAGER to believe that our own government carried out the worst terrorist action in recent memory (and, in fact, NEED to believe it in order to justify that only their ideology has merit in our society), then no, I don't know if any sort of manageable reconciliation is achievable. Not in this generation at least.

Heck, go to Amazon's message boards. I got banned for mocking the insane belief that Israel was behind 9/11 by blaming Israel for opposing the Magna Carta, etc

And there you've illustrated the *real* problem, that everybody's so busy pointing fingers that nobody's talking. For every example one side comes up with, the other side tries to pile up more so that the conversation isn't about issues or compromise, it's about which side acted badly last or worst--about as unproductive a conversation as it gets.

I swear, it's like watching 4 year olds in a bout of 'He started it!' most days.

        • Oh, the right has a wealth of pricks. No shortage of them. But I've not seen a person from the right who basically claimed all of their problems based on their opponents being "mean".

Let's, for example, look at 2006. I don't know a single conservative who blames mean press of mean Dems. They blame a collection of idiots in leadership who deserved to get their butts handed to them.

          • ... George Bush intentionally caused 9/11 ...
Well, if one is to believe a recent documentary on the local subsidiary of CNN (oh, I know CNN is the devil's leftist network and therefore not to believed at all ) the US gov is at least responsible for firefighters and other people who tried to help on 9/11 not getting payment for adequate treatment for the their lung problems which have been caused by asbestos and a mixture of other toxic stuff that has been used in the towers through denying that those have ever been used in those buildings.
            That alone is vicious enough.

                • I'm not quite sure what you mean. He's scheduled to be there on Monday...

Oh, wait...you didn't read the column in the link, did you? It's not about Ground Zero; it's about him coming to Columbia University.

The same school that doesn't allow ROTC on campus is allowing this lowlife to come and speak. Shameful.

The hypocrisy is deeper than that. Remember, this is the same campus that had the infamous incident with the Minutemen, where Columbia students actually stormed the stage and refused to let Minutemen founder Jim Gilchrist speak. All of this is, of course, under the pretense that Gilchrist and the Minutemen are "racists" for daring to believe in border enforcement and the American rule of law regarding immigration matters.

But there you go. Someone like Gilchrist isn't acceptable, because he's considered racist. Ahma....however you spell that cocksucker's name.....he ROUTINELY calls for the destruction of Israel and is a denier of the Holocaust, and he's perfectly okay to speak there.

Report warns of rise of right-wing extremists

Hmmm, just a day before the national tea parties.

First off, the report was from the Dept. of Homeland Security, not the White House.

And second, Homeland Security also put out a report in late January warning about left-wing extremists.

Sounds "Fair and Balanced" to me.

I don't see what this has to do with anything Obama's done. Care to expand on it?

How does DHS define "right-wing extremism'? It writes that it "can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration."
Gee...we just recently elected an African-American to be president. Is it possible for ANYone to be surprised by the "rise of right-wing extremists" looking for recruits?
