Gasoline prices went up because the price of crude oil -- which is a highly speculative commodity -- went up.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.
Interesting. I would think that the American voters can blame themselves for their choices, just like voters in any other democratic country. What is more likely though, is that they will go into a state of denial(no pun intended) and blame it on somebody else. Which would be Bush I presume. Or Rumsfeld of course, the proverbial scapegoat at the moment.
About what would have been needed; I just reread Bob Woodward's book 'Veil, the secret wars of the CIA'. He describes the CIA under Ronald Reagan, and pretty good. He got all the cooperation he needed from the administration and Casey talked to him for hours.
Not that I usually call Woodward a liar --- but, if memory serves, Casey WAS IN A COMA when Woodward claims to have interviewed him. It just seems a wee bit odd.
Not relevant to the topic, but interesting nonetheless.
But we as a country are not willing to do what is needed to win the war. If we were, the war would've ended a while ago.
Sometimes, it is best to be feared and not loved.
BTW : Pelosi has already ruled out any impeachment-procedure against Bush. Stinks like 'You fire Rumsfeld and we won't impeach you George'...
To let you know, there is already a bill in the House --- been there for a while --- calling for Impeachment proceedings to begin and Pelosi won't discharge it. She won't be able to stop Conyers --- and she does not want to or else she'll piss off her base.
And in addition to that, they made all of the voting machines have the votes go to the democratic candidate.
It's amazing how I have seen no complaints about voter disenfranchisement this year...
There are also few complaints about how incredibly bad the exit polls were. Fox had to throw out theirs entirely because they weren't even close to reality.

...According to Barone, they were, on average, 6 points in the Dem favor above reality...

And that would be what exactly?
Btw, IMHO it really doesn't matter whether US troops are in or out of Iraq. As long as the Shiites are ruling the country the Sunites will throw bombs. And if the Sunites were to run the country the Shiites would bomb away. Noone will ever be able to stop it but the people themselves. But as some of you so correctly observed, that's probably never gonna happen.
So staying in is basically just a waste of human ressources.

I've been told that Fox News and reality are mutual exclusive. So what else is new?

What, you want someone to outright say it? I will.
Kill people. Kill a LOT of people. Thousands if necessary. And start levelling every mosque used by or giving aid to insurgents.
Pacification is easy. Our problem was trying to win the hearts and minds of a savage people who were never going to accept us to begin with.

Ok,
I'm rising to this one. in fact I barely need to. I'll simply quote from two sources
1) JMS No occuppying force has ever supressed anotehr by force of arms alone (I'm parphrasing here)

"There are no good wars. War is always the worst possible way to resolve differences. It degenerates and corrupts both sides to ever more sordid levels of existence, in their need to gain an advantage over the enemy. Those actively involved in combat are almost always damaged goods for the rest of their lives. If their bodies don't bear scars, their minds do, ofttimes both. Many have said it before, but it can't be said to enough, war is hell. "

NEVER quote JMS to me on matters of foreign policy.
I'd rather just ask my dog's opinion, because at least he'd do that amusing / cute turn-of-the-head that dogs do.

I was going to post some quotes from Bush 6 years ago about how he wouldn't use the military as nation builders, and that use of force wouldn't be in the national interest and would instead use pressure and diplomacy with regard to Iraq. I also would have posted the reasons Bush gave which explained how he would use force- if our territory is threatened or that of our allies or the Middle East; whether or not the mission was clear; if we were prepared and trained to win; and if there was an exit strategy.
Instead I'll just post this picture.
