English is not her first language, shes from somewhere in Eastern Europe (I forget). That may explain it.

If you listen to JMS's commentery on the DVDs (season 3 I think) when she breaks the grey council he reveals she's actually form yugoslavia. There's also quite a funny comment about the breaking of the staff - but I'll leave you to discover it on your own.

Dragging it back off topic (which is on-topic for this thread) Denial Dae Kim (1st officer in crusade) also has a major role in Lost(as the Korean guy). If you've not seen numbers (season 1 - episode 16 or 17 with Hurley's back story) then Mira reappears in that one.

"There are no good wars. War is always the worst possible way to resolve differences. It degenerates and corrupts both sides to ever more sordid levels of existence, in their need to gain an advantage over the enemy. Those actively involved in combat are almost always damaged goods for the rest of their lives. If their bodies don't bear scars, their minds do, ofttimes both. Many have said it before, but it can't be said to enough, war is hell. "

You make it sound as it was a secret.
Mira Furlan husband (i think it was his husband) also directed one of the season 5 episodes.

I've heard that there will be at least one episode this season with Danielle, Mira's character. No word yet on when she'll be filming it or what episode it is, though.

Disappointingly, Mira had also filmed an episode of Night Stalker that was supposed to air on Dec. 8, but the show's been cancelled with no plans to air the episodes left.

I've enjoyed watching Daniel Dae Kim in Lost. It has to have been a hard role to play a character who doesn't speak any English. He's done a great job.

            Mira or the poster?

            "Yes."
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

Not really, Mira Furlan was/is from Eastern Europe which normally gives people one hell of an accent. I think she actually speaks verrrrrrrrry good English for a person from behind the Iron Curtain, you should hear them normally(I'm not dissing the folks over there but JeeZ... ). Compare Mira to Rutger Hauer and you will know what I mean. Both Europeans, both came to America for a career in acting, and their English accent is worlds apart...
Although I have to admit ; even for a dutchman Rutger's accent is very good. But of course he has lived in the States since 1979 or so...

Anyway ; before I shut the f*ck up about that dutch guy who outclassed Harrison Ford I will leave you with this quote from the final sequence that he made up himself...

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams ... glitter in the dark near Tanhauser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost ... in time, like tears ... in rain. Time ... to die."

I still find that a very memorable part of the movie as it humanized the Androids beautifully. Aah, they don't make 'em like that anymore. And Phil Dick is dead. Well, his body is dead...

Please don't get me started on what ABC did to Night Stalker....

In other news, I just started watching Lost beginning with the epidsode that dealt with the tail end passengers. I await Mia's appearence eagerly. Jan you're right (not that it should come as much of a surprise ) DDK's acting job is solid as always and really does get accross what he wants to even though he's only speaking Korean

I think that one of the greater over-arcing performance challenges of DDK's character on Lost is portraying effectively the appropriate level of communication frustration in his lines to non-Korean speaking characters. Wanting to say something to someone and knowing how to say it but not in a way that they can understand you, I think, is one of the most stressful parts of being unable to speak a common language (by common language, I mean one that is known to the all or vast majority of people who are participants in the conversation) since the whole reason for the existance and use of language is to communicate. DDK performs that part of his character quite admirably.

Maybe she went to acting school with Shatner. *shrug*

To be more precise, language exists to communicate thoughts and emotions using symbolism. Technically, he can communicate with the others who do not speak his language. Hell, animals communicate.

Most scientists agree that the ability to use language is what makes an animal "sentient."

... Rutger made that up? Where did you hear that? If it's true, that is very cool.

... Blade Runner is a fantastic film, and "Do Robots Dream of Electric Sheep", by Phillip K. Dick is a fantastic novel.... though the film is only very loosely based on the book, isn't it? I mean, the guy Hauer's character is based on dies rather quickly in the book, and is not developed (as a character) at all, really.

... I always liked Rutger Hauer. I remember a film I saw once, years ago, that I've since been searching for on video at the video shops... Can't recall the title... Playing the game "Dog Skull" in a post-apocolyptic world...

"I think I'll pass on the tuna, thanks."

I seem to recall reading that Daniel Dae Kim was lambasted online by Koreans or Korean-Americans, I can't remember which, about the fact that his dialect was a little bit off, so he made a point of working on it until it was right. That's a dedicated actor.

And I have to say, Mira Furlan and her husband Goran are two of the most delightful people you will ever meet. I remember asking her years ago if she actually thought in English or in her native language. As somebody whose foreign language skills are less than exceptional (I'm reminded of Bruce Willis' line from The Fifth Element: I speak two languages; English and bad English) I've always been curious about whether or not someone shifts their thinking process to a new language when they move to a new country, or if their brain continues to translate from their native language.

I remember being on set when Goran was directing his episode of B5, and it was nice to see how the cast responded so beautifully to having him there. At one point, he was looking at the very top of a set, trying to figure out if he could get a camera up there, and it was interesting to see somebdoy tryng to figure out if he could find places to shoot where no one had ever shot before. Go back and look at that episode, and you'll sometimes see some really interesting shots.
