  • DVD Screen Grabs?

How do I extract/grab individual pics from a DVD, say to make a simple jpeg file? DVD player is Dell standard and I tried importing to Corel Paint Shop Pro X trial version but can't figure it out (if it's even possible with the software I'm using). Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Simply put, I have not a clue.

Err... not sure, having never used Corel, but most "Paint Shops" that I've fiddled with don't grab anything but scanners directly. You can't tell it "I got this DVD here, go fetch". What you'd have to do is find a screen grab program, play your DVD through the normal means on your PC, pause it at the right spot, then run the screen grabber. That'll spit some kind of .tga/.bmp/.jpg out, and you'll be able to edit that with Corel.

Corel might even have a screen grab feature, I dunno.

There's likely easier ways to do it, I'm sure there's some media software lurking to rip straight from DVD and preserve all the video quality and such. I'm just not well versed. The above is how I'd do it.

Most DVD player software allows you to do screengrabs directly with the press of some hotkey (refer to the documentation that came with the software). If not, pause the player at the right frame, make sure the player is the active window, and press <CTRL><ALT><Print Screen> (hold down the first two keys while hitting the last key -- NOTE: I'm assuming you are using a WinPC for this).

However you get the screengrab copied, all you (should) need to do is paste it into whatever drawing program you choose. All you should need to do is create a new blank document and select "Paste" from the Edit menu (or just hit <CTRL><P>).

      Hope that helps.

The way I get screen grabs is through video editing software. While DVDÆs have Microvision or other types of copy protection burned with the movie. Buying an inexpensive USB or capture card for less than $100 does the trick nicely.

Of course once you get in to video editingĂ  it just opens another list of video editing questions that maybe beyond the scope of this site.

... I use a high-resolution digital camera on a tripod, flash off, and record it straight from the screen.

          ... The 'low-tech' solution, I guess.

I found WinDVD does a screen grab quite nicely at the touch of a button while watching stuff on my laptop..... then gives you a kind of clipboard affair if you take more than one.....
