  • Star Trek's Sulu comes out of the closet

CNN Headline News ran a "crawler" across the screen a few minutes ago announcing that George Takei, best known for portraying Sulu on Star Trek, has announced that he is gay.

Confirming something fans had suspected for MANY years. You never saw him with any women, he never married, even in his autobiography he never mentioned any romantic interests.

I was afraid when I saw the crawler they were going to say he had died, I'm glad that's not the case. He has always seemed to be the healthiest of the lot.
You can't win if you don't play!!

I, too would have wondered if he'd died if I saw a 'crawler' with his name. How odd, and sad, that somebody's sexuality should be 'headline' news in this day and age. (Edit: That's a comment on society, not your post, btw)

Here's the Frontiers Magazine article I found where Mr. Takei says:

BradÆs my partner, weÆve been together for 18 years. So, IÆve been ôopen,ö but I have not talked to the press.
I wish them every continued happiness.

Maybe that's why Sulu didn't get his Excelsior show through; maybe they were afraid he'd try to push a gay agenda. Not that Paramount is anti-gay, but they probably didn't want to go that route when it was on the table.

Also explains why Takei and Shatner hate each other. Shatner, with his high school jock attitude, probably said some stuff could have directly or indirectly offended Takei.

Man...now there's a whole new outlook on the scene in "Mirror, Mirror" where mirror Sulu comes on to the extremely hot-looking Uhura decked out in mirror garb.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

Bill Shatner is one of those people the more I know the about the less I respect. The small town in Iowa he aced is still mad as hell at him and Bill seems to always be willing to see out to the Highest bider.

Hey, maybe they should find someone lower on the tier for their conventions.

I know it is superfluous but I will say it anyway : I really don't care if someone is gay or not. Even more so when it comes to people I don't personally know.

As long as they do a good job and they are not overly gay in public who cares?

And speaking as a dutchman : I could do without the annual Gay Parade all over Amsterdam, with all these half-naked guys showing off a la "look at me, I'm GAAAAAAYYYY!". I don't see the hetero's do that.

Oh well, whatever it takes to be happy.

Now I have to tell ya, I'm waiting for the news that Shatner has come out of the closet...

Yeah, those type of people over here in places like SF give good gay people a bad name. And are you sure they're not fully naked? It IS Amsterdam, after all...

You gotta turn to something once you get tired of the green women.

Nah, I never see young hetero couples making out. Never see them ramming their tongues so far down each others throats it looks like they are attempting to do mutual appendectomies. Right.

I tend to be offended at ANYBODY being overtly sexual in public. It tends to create far too many questions among my 9 and 10 year old daughters. Questions I am not quite ready, but unavoidably will have to be really soon, to answer.

When I see someone doing something that makes me think "get a room", I tell them, and mean it. Regardless of the gender pairing involved.

Thats why they call themselves Gay. hehe pun

On a side note I found out not to long about the term 'gay' has only really been tied with the homosexuals since the early 80's.

As a Classsic TREK fan, GT's 'coming out' affects me not in the least. He is a quite and confident professional that gets the work done. I will still enjoy his scenes in TREK and wish him all the best.

My take on this non-situation is this. A person's sexuality or preferences are their business, and theirs only. His 'gayness' - for want of a better word - is none of my business, just as my heterosexuality is none of his. It is just not a matter that I deem as improtant as far as subjects to discuss go. It's a shame that people seem to think that that kind of thing still matters anymore, I mean...HEADLINE NEWS???! Sensationalism or what?

If George came back to the UK to one of our events (collectormania or some such), I hear that he is very appreciative of his fans and so I would be very pleased to meet him, share a laugh and photo or two with him - time permitting AND pay for his autograph. Lord knows, I paid for Shatner's at the last Collectormania, and he was a total and complete 'superstar-type' arse-hole (Rude, temperamental, uncommunicative etc - you name a negative personality aspect and he showed it! Not to me personally, but certainly to people in front of and behind me in the queue - I must have been lucky, becuase if he HAD been like that to me personally I would have given him a very sharp hard and colourful lesson in exaclty why you don't honk off a person with Spanish blood).

Nope, they do wear something. It's often very hard to see what...or where... Thank God they only show it on tv for a few seconds in the news.

I don't give a (sorry Jan!) flying fuck about what people are. But when they start to get vulgar it's just not my cup of tea.

                          O.K. On topic :

So The Original Series had :

                          1) A gay guy in the main cast
                          2) a nymphomaniac in the main cast
                          3) a black woman in the main cast
                          4) the first interracial kiss on American tv.

It just keeps getting more groundbreaking doesn't it?
