Werner Herzog, Harmony Korine, David Lynch and weird cinema in general

Yes! Herzog is one of the greats of cinema. There are no directors left like him, he truly suffered for him art, went to extreme lengths to get his films made. If you've seen the documentary about the making of Fitzcarraldo you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. Aguirre Wrath of God remains one of my all time favourite films.

I am also a massive Popol Vuh fan, the outfit that soundtracked many of Herzog's 70s and 80s films.

I have seen "Burden of Dreams" (and "Mein liebster Feind" aka "My best Fiend" and a lot of others).

Have you seen "Lebenszeichen" (Signs of Life), "The WIld Blue Yonder" "Herz aus Glas" (Heart of Glass) or "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?"?

I have seen "The Wild Blue Yonder" and "Herz aus Glas" (Heart of Glass), both are great films but very different.

Wild Blue Yonder is more like a nature documentary with a loose narrative narrated by an alien whose planet is dying. It's cool. Quite unique.

Herz aus Glas, I really need to see again. It's one of those slow meditative pieces and if I remember correctly it features Florian from Popul Vuh playing piano in an insane asylum.

Ahhh, you are indeed right. I was thinking of The Enigma of Kasper Hauser with Florian. I really do need to go back and re-visit a lot of these Herzog films!

Great! I had a time where I geeked out about the films and the behind the scenes stuff.

I still love most of Herzog's films still though.


If you consider buying a Herzog film on Blu-ray, go with the British releases of his 60s-90s filmography.
They are generally the best ones worldwide.

But some films are only available on Blu-ray in the US (My Best Fiend, Even Dwarfs Started Small and a couple more).

Bad Lieutenant was also superior on Blu in the UK.
Invincible was - last tiome I checked - only released in France.

Aside from Lynch, Herzog and Korines I would recommend for you to check out "Beasts of the Southern Wild" or Wim Wenders' "Der Himmel ueber Berlin" (Wings of Desire).

Hmm, I never was a big Cronenberg guy.
I gre up with his "The Fly" Remake and later tried to watch Naked Lunch and Videodrome.

Maybe I give this dude another chance later on.
