The Matrix relaunch in early stages at WB

It's in early stages but Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand...) will write a treatment. Michael B. Jordan could star.

WB are inspired by the relaunch of Star Wars, which has spin-offs released every other year, eg a "young-Han Solo film" is in production right now, and WB are thinking of making a plethora of movies set in the Matrix universe, including, eg a "young-Morpheus film".

Sense8 fans need not to worry, the Wachowskis are not involved in any capacity with the relaunch currently, although the studio would like to get them to endorse the project.

Personally, I'd like to see a Matrix spin off film in the hands of other directors / creators. Outside of the first film, I still think The Animatrix was some of the best stuff to come out of the franchise. It can be fun to see others play in an established universe, especially if they're very capable in their own right.

Michael B Jordan was good in The Wire. Solid actor.

I still have a lot of time for the first matrix film, but would be leery of watching anything else Matrix related by the Wachowskis. I struggled to sit through either of the sequels, bloody awful films IMHO. A good director and writer could surpass those films in terms of quality, in much the same way that Disney have hit home runs with the new Star Wars films, which have been good enough to wash away the bitter taste of Lucas' ham fisted prequels.

If this does go ahead without the Ws, then at least they'll know how Alan Moore felt about their adaptation of V for Vendetta!

But yeah, I am with you on the reboot thing. I'd rather see new films, with new ideas. I'd be surprised if this got past the rumour stage!

They said they felt bad about what happened and that's why they insisted David Michell approve their Cloud Atlas script. If he said he didn't like it, they would simply not move forward with it. (Fortunately, he loved it, they became friends, and he is collaborating with them on Sense8's season 2).

I certainly have no interest. I think I would be slightly interested if the Wachowskis AND JMS were involved, but even then I think only slightly. I don't hate the sequels, but I do feel they were wasted opportunities. On the other hand, I don't think I want to see another person's version of the same thing. That is funny considering most of everything we see is just a different version of something that has already been done.

But to be severe: I loved the Battlestar Galactica reboot (but not the ending).

I didn't know this. Glad they learnt from the experience. Cool that Michell has contributed to Sense8 S2, was he involved with scripting / story ideas?

Mitchell's name first came up regarding a framed ink print "signed by members of the Sense8 season 2 (S8S2) creative team during the closed door writing sessions at Kinowerks Studios". The other persons that signed it were: Lana Wachowski, J. Michael Straczynski, Tom Tykwer, Aleksandar Hemon, James McTeigue, Dan Glass, Julie Brown.

In other words, the two creators/writers, the other two directors, the VFX supervisor, the script supervisor and journalist/novelist Aleksandar Hemon. Only Mitchell and Hemon are new to the list and they were listed as "writers".

When I noticed this print I looked online and I didn't find anything regarding Mitchell's involvement, but I did find a quote by Hemon "And I was part of the team that worked on the script of the second season of Sense8, a series created for Netflix."

Then, when the Christmas Special was released, I noticed that in the closing credits both Mitchell and Hemon get "consultant" credit.

Based on all that, I conclude that Mitchell and Hemon took part in brainstorming sessions and left notes, but didn't deliver a complete script.

By August, the trio had a completed draft to send to Mitchell. The Wachowskis had had a difficult experience adapting "V for Vendetta," from a comic book whose author, Alan Moore, hated the very idea of Hollywood adaptation and berated the project publicly. Strictly speaking, the filmmakers were under no obligation to seek Mr. Mitchell’s approval. They had bought the rights and could do whatever they liked. But after Alan Moore, the author of the graphic novel on which “V for Vendetta” is based, complained bitterly about that movie, the Wachowskis determined not to make “Cloud Atlas” unless Mr. Mitchell gave his blessing.

On V for Vendetta they never had the rights anyway I believe. Joel Silver had them.

So this just popped in my head because we are discussing The Matrix and V For Vendetta was mentioned, what is the current state of the relationship between The Wachowskis and Hugo Weaving? Anyone know? I absolutely LOVE him. (Two of my favorites Proof & The Interview) I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, but I would FREAK OUT (in a good way) if there was any chance of him becoming part of Sense 8. Speaking of which, I would FREAK OUT if there was any chance of him becoming a part of any future JMS project including a Babylon 5 reboot.

Their relationship is great. He was considered to play a role in their latest film, Jupiter Ascending, but for whatever reason it didn't happen.

I'm sure they'd like to get him involved somehow in Sense8, perhaps in a later season as the big bad, or perhaps a very special role. He doesn't have to be the bad guy, for one in V he wasn't!

Season 2 of Sense8 got a new batch of Wachowski collaborators involved with it (Kick Gurry and Martin Wuttke in front of the camera, David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon in the writers' room), and the trend is likely to continue.

Who I'd really like to see in Sense8 is Carrie-Anne Moss. She was great in Jessica Jones, plus she's already working with Netflix (and she sent a "nice note" to Lilly when she came out), so why not?

I would also LOVE to see Weaving play Londo or G'Kar. While we're at it Garibaldi. While I think my top choice would be Bester, I feel like Weaving could also really pull off Londo or G'Kar and as Garibaldi he could be stunning. (Sorry, watched Parliament of Dreams, 1.5, last night.)

Not a good idea starting with a character-focused prequel. That kind of film makes more sense to make as a side-story, after the franchise has been relaunched successfully with a BIG film; Rogue One or "Young Han Solo" did not start the Star Wars relaunch.

If you really want to make a prequel, make it BIG for your relaunch, eg "The Second Renaissance" adaptation in 2 to 3 films. And in-between you can have your young Morpheus film.

This sounds like an incredibly dumb model to re-launch the Matrix as a feasible franchise. WB have failed badly at shared universe films, just look at their last few comic book films to set up Justice Leage. All total garbage.

Yeah. Birthmoviesdeath has an ok track record so there's a chance they are not fishing for clicks and they are telling the truth, though you never know, they are not quite on the level of legitimacy as The Hollywood Reporter. Then again, The Hollywood Reporter (in the article in the OP) mentioned a young Morpheus film, but I imagined as something that would come later down the line, not as the first film!

I mean, my personal hope is that everything they do fails and they forget about the franchise, unless it is okayed if not supervised by the Wachowskis as they did back in the day with the anime, comics and games (which is quite unlikely to say the least), but still.. Why are WB doing what they are doing? Don't they want to, like, make money? Following the Star Wars relaunch model, without actually understanding the Star Wars relaunch model.. What?

But it's clear it's very early and there are various ideas being thrown around the writers' room, so perhaps people will consider.
