  • Cameron 'actively involved' with Forbidden Planet

    "Straczynski went on to explain that he has a very specific plan for the project, something unique and fresh. "ItÆs not a remake. ItÆs not a reimagining. ItÆs not exactly a prequel," he explained at the time. "YouÆll have to see it. ItÆs something that no one has thought of when it comes to this storyline." With all of this in mind, MTV's Josh Horowitz had to ask what was up with "Planet" when he spoke to Cameron recently at the "Avatar" junket in London.

    "That's a project that I'm actively involved in, but I haven't made any decisions about it yet," Cameron said, adding "I love 'Forbidden Planet.'"

    <snip>

    "Besides, it's not like Cameron can make a decision before he gets a feel for where the project is. Which he hasn't yet. "I haven't seen it yet," he said of Straczynski's script. "I'm supposed to get it here pretty soon.""

    In his last post, JMS said he was working on the draft and I think he mentioned in a recent interview that he'd be turning it in around the end of the year.

      This could be THE one to break JMS uber huge!

      As much as I am unsure of Cameron's...shall we say...people skills (ie old plain and simple good manners) he, as a film make has way more hits than missses, so this should be awesome if it ever gets done.

        As long as we talk about the classic OLD Cameron from Terminator I+II, Aliens, True Lies and Abyss, not the barely talented guy who directed Titanic and Avatar - who for some unknown reason goes by the same name...!

          Just remembered that JMS was clearly stoked by FP at some point because there is such an obvious visual homage to it in VOICE IN THE WILDERNESS. The deep shafts of super powerful machinery on the planet is such a distinct nod that I recognised it straight away.

          Perfect choice to write a new script then

            Wow, that really does sound exciting. I would love to see Forbidden Planet redone, as a matter of fact a plain remake would suit me just fine. Especially if these people are involved! I'm not too big on Avatar actually but thankfully Forbidden Planet would be a complete different direction. Shall be interesting...!

              My problems with Avatar are all in the writing and the story not the directing, so a JMS written and Cameron directed movie feels like a winner to me.

                Of course, the director has a great deal of influence over what's in the script. Especially a director who has the two highest grossing movies of all time.
