I saw "Ninja Assassin" today. Even having read reviews and seen trailers, I wasn't sure what to expect. I had no idea what 'stylized violence' meant, for instance. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. Not that there weren't plenty of scenes that I closed my eyes for...there definitely were, but in between there was a halfway decent story as long as you don't look too closely at some of the logic.
As JMS said in one interview, it's pure popcorn but good popcorn. According to Deadline Hollywood Daily, it came in #6 for the weekend:
Just saw the movie tonight. Wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was very well done. Great action, movie intense throughout, and I thought it was a good story structure with the way the past was weaved into the present. The gory effects were done much better than a lot of horror films, and I was glad to see a Ninja movie not let up with how brutal Ninjitsu weapons can be. I thought the characters were well done, especially the intensity from the head of the clan. There are several spots where I could tell and say "Joe wrote that!" and I was glad he added his mark to this movie. Enjoyed every minute of it. Well done.
